LONDON.- Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions Modern and Contemporary Editions auction will take place at Bloomsbury House, 24 Maddox Street, London at 10.30am on Thursday 21st July 2016. The sale will include works from some of the biggest names in Modern and Contemporary art such as Banksy, Bridget Riley, Andy Warhol, Picasso and L.S Lowry, with estimates ranging from £100 to £18,000.
Headlining the auction will be thirteen important etchings from Pablo Picassos 1931 book, Le Chef-D'Oeuvre Inconnu (lot 222), estimated at £12,000 - £18,000. A further auction highlight is lot 364, Rose Rose, by leading op-artist Bridget Riley, estimated to reach £3,000 - £4,000. Also of particular note is Antony Gormleys Feeling Material XXIII (Lot no. 289), estimated to reach £10,000 - £15,000. This is one of a series which Gormley describes as his attempt to describe the space of the body using a matrix formed of rings. This work is fresh to the market; it was a gift given to the previous owner by the artist himself.
Andy Warhols Art Cash (lot 401) is estimated to reach £2,000 - £3,000. In December 1971, Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) held The "Art Cash Benefit for Television Programming" fundraising event. Artists designed currency for the event; this Art Cash was then purchased by attendees and could be used to gamble at casino style tables set up for the event, to purchase drinks, and buy donated artwork. Lot 401 is the complete set of three lithographed sheets, stamp signed by Andy Warhol and signed in pencil by Robert Whitman, Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Gormley, Red Grooms and Marisol.
Laurence Stephen Lowrys Station Approach (lot 42) lithograph, signed by the artist and from the edition of 850 printed in Vienna, is estimated at £2,500- £3,500. This view of the London and North Western Railway Exchange Station, which lay close to Manchester Cathedral, and has since been fully demolished and the station approach is now a car park.
Also featured in the sale is Saint George et le Dragon (Lot 123, Est: £10,000-£15,000) by Salvador Dalí. In Dalís interpretation of the famous battle between good and evil, we see Dali himself as St George, while his muse looks on. This striking bronze, originally conceived in 1977 and first cast in 1984, was cast circa 2000 in an edition of 350 and is inscribed 'Dali' on the top of the plinth.
Characteristic of his work, Banksys 2004 Flying Copper (lot 249) ironically juxtaposes the coppers smiley face with the gun he is holding. This iconic print is estimated to realise £2,000 - £3,000. An artist who Banksy has credited as having a huge influence on his work is Blek le Rat, will be featured in a special section of the sale. This dynamic section comprises around 30 lots, all with attractive estimates, and features works from some of the most prolific Urban artists, such as D*Face and Nick Walker.
Works by Roy Lichtenstein, Henry Moore, Lill Tschudi, Alex Katz, John Piper and many more exceptional Modern & Contemporary artists will also go under the hammer in this auction.
