NEW YORK, NY.- Charles Moretz plans to reprint the photos that were on permanent display in the Windows On The World restaurant. His six photographic murals were among the artwork lost at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Titled Point Of Departure, the installation depicted the Twin Towers and was commissioned in 1982 by Guy Tozzoli, president of the World Trade Centers Association and the creator of the WTC for the Port Authority of NY & NJ specifically for the restaurant at the top of the North Tower.

Now, using his original chromes, Mr. Moretz, a visual artist and designer, is making plans to use modern technology to bring back the Windows On The World photos as a large scale exhibit called Genius Loci - protectors of the spirit of the place. Genius Loci will offer the otherwise unobtainable experience of what it was like to sense and appreciate the iconic Twin Towers environs. As a permanent, site-specific, meditative installation, Genius Loci will serve as a symbolic guardian ancestor of the newborn WTC.

“Soon after 9/11, I knew I wanted to create a meaningful expression using my photography, but it was too soon and the emotional impact too strong,” Mr. Moretz said. “Slowly, over time, I remembered what the images themselves represented – a presence.”

He continued, “I believe that large-scale, iconic photographs of the original Twin Towers, set within expansive architecture, can create a powerful and compelling experience, building a relationship with the viewer that is simultaneously uplifting and challenging. My vision is to foster connection and reconnection with the original WTC, paying tribute to its memory while celebrating its lasting meaning.”

A downtown resident since the early ‘70s, Mr. Moretz won the commission on the strength of his portfolio of a decade’s worth of artistic photos displaying the scale and beauty of The Twin Towers. He was known for his frequent and passionate use of the WTC area as muse and artistic inspiration.

For almost twenty years, hundreds of thousands of visitors to Windows On The World came to know the Point of Departure murals, some soaring as high as 17 feet, for their projection of the powerful presence and distinctive architecture of the Twin Towers - symbolic as the international center for world trade.

Genius Loci USA, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit corporation and collaboration between Mr. Moretz and Seventy Acres, LLC. Mr. Moretz is donating the use of his photographic collection to the project. Corporate sponsorship will also be essential to create Genius Loci and provide free public access.
