SANTA FE, NM.- More than a dozen monumental works by sculptor Mavis McClure are presently featured in a two person exhibition with painter Georges Mazilu, which opened on August 26th and will run through the end of September.

McClure, who relocated her studio from San Francisco to Santa Fe in 2001, is renowned for her larger than life figural works in bronze and clay that are dominated by exaggerated hands and feet, which accentuate and focus on gestural nuances, such as the tilt of the head or turn of a hand. The works in this exhibition range in size from 10” to 64” in height, and include both cast bronze sculptures, including Naima (Blue) and her works in glazed ceramics, such as Woman and Child (Green).

A self-taught artist, McClure’s body of ambitious sculptures in this exhibition demonstrate how she has developed innovative processes that defy conventional approaches to the materials in which she works. For instance, the walls of her clay bodies are much thinner than those of most other ceramic figurative artists, among them Viola Frey and Robert Arneson.

The juxtaposition of McClure’s material based sculpture with its patina of bronze and fine glazes of clay, and the stylings of Mazilu’s old master palette present explorations of the human and animal forms: hands on, from the earth, yet changed.

Turner Carroll Gallery is located at 725 Canyon Road in Santa Fe, and is open seven days a week from 10:00am until 6:00pm and on Fridays from 10:00am until 7:00pm.
