Sotheby's sales of Modern and Contemporary Asian Art achieve US$89,532,371

HONG KONG.- Top lot of the Evening Sale, Zao Wou-Ki’s Paysage dans la lune, achieved HK$46.68 million / US$ 5.98 million

· Top quality modern works continue to perform with strength, with Zao Wou-Ki’s Paysage dans la lune, Ailleurs, and Wu Guanzhong’s The Hometown of Lu Xun being the top three lots

· Two important works on paper sales were 100% sold, reflecting strong market demand for such rare offerings. The success is also a testament to Sotheby’s meticulous sourcing approach and reinforces Sotheby’s position as a market leader in Modern Asian Art

o 16 lots from The Sublime – Wou-Ki Zao achieved a total of HK$20.8 million / US$2.67 million, 1.27 times the high estimate

o 22 lots from Sanyu’s works on paper collection, Ineffable Beauty, realised HK$14.3 million / US$ 1.83 million, 2.68 times the high estimate

CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART TWO-DAY TOTAL: HK$312,430,000 / US$40,028,129

· Two-day combined total for the category close to pre-sale high-estimate

· Strong debut performance of Contemporary Chinese photographic works at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Evening Sale, with Ai Weiwei’s Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (set of three) and Yu Fudong’s The First Intellectual both sold above high estimates, confirming Sotheby’s capability to address market demand through careful sourcing

· Contemporary Japanese works continue to perform well. The combined sale total of works by Japanese artists amounts to HK$150 million / US$19.3 million, exceeding the pre-sale high estimate

· 11 lots by Nara Yoshitomo 100% sold

· ‘Full Circle II: Yoshihara Jiro Collection’ in the Day Sale achieved a sale total over the high estimate

· Market demand for contemporary Chinese art remains solid. Top quality works are sought after by the market and attracted bidders from around the world

· Exceptional sell-through rate (sold by value: 96%; sold by lot: 82%), with enthusiastic worldwide participation
