Robert Manley joins Phillips' 20th Century & Contemporary Art Department
Phillips has been actively building its 20th Century & Contemporary Art department. Along with Mr. Manley, the company recently hired Scott Nussbaum, who started last month as Senior Specialist and Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art in New York. Mr. Nussbaum joined the company from Sotheby’s, where he was a Vice President in the Contemporary Art Department.

NEW YORK, NY.- Phillips announced the appointment of Hugues Joffre as Special Advisor to Chief Executive Officer Edward Dolman, in addition to his role as Chairman of the company in Europe. Robert Manley, who joined the firm in October 2016, has been appointed Worldwide Co-Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art. Mr. Manley will partner with existing Worldwide Co-Head Jean-Paul Engelen to lead the department as Phillips continues to strengthen its team of international specialists and expand its range of art and expertise available to collectors.

In his capacity as Co-Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Mr. Joffre has spent the last 18 months establishing expertise in 20th century art, since offered alongside contemporary art to create a new 20th Century & Contemporary Art department. Moving forward, he will concentrate on developing Phillips’ most important relationships with collectors in his capacity as Chairman of Europe as well as continuing to work closely with Mr. Dolman and Chief of Staff Lisa King advising on the future development of the 20th Century & Contemporary Art department.

Mr. Manley, a leading expert in 20th century and post-war art with more than 25 years of experience joined Phillips from Christie’s, where he was Deputy Chairman of Post-War and Contemporary Art. He will lead the company’s efforts to offer an increasing amount of 20th century art alongside contemporary works as Phillips looks to meet the demands of the market. Mr. Engelen joined Phillips a year ago after a career at Qatar Museums, where he was the Director of Public Art Programs, and Christie’s, where he was a Director of Post-War and Contemporary Art. Mr. Manley and Mr. Engelen are based in New York, while Mr. Joffre will continue in London.

“Hugues has played a key role in strengthening Phillips’ expertise and knowledge in 20th century art and in leading the international team since his arrival,” said Mr. Dolman. “As part of a planned transition, Hugues will now advise me and the senior leadership team on all aspects of art of the previous century and will concentrate on developing our most significant client relationships in his capacity as Chairman of Europe. I am also delighted that Robert Manley joined our team. Robert and Jean-Paul are informed, passionate and devoted to helping collectors, and they will drive our ambitious and creative plans to build the strongest contemporary department in the business.”
