GLENS FALLS, NY.- Werner Feibes and the late James Schmitt have transformed
The Hyde Collection with their generous gift of Modern and Contemporary art. Beginning October 15, the Museum will display a selection from this remarkable 160-piece collection, signifying a new era at The Hyde as it expands its focus from its distinguished collection of European and American artists to include Post-war non-objective art, and other forms of abstract art.
Transforming The Hyde: The Feibes & Schmitt Gift will be on view in the Hoopes Gallery through December 31, and will feature paintings, drawings, prints, mixed media, and sculpture by some of the worlds leading artists of the Modern era.
In August, the Museum announced that Werner Feibes was gifting the remainder of his collection of 100 works to The Hyde, building on an initial gift of sixty works in 2015. Along with this donation, Mr. Feibes also gave The Hyde a $1 million leadership donation to create a gallery devoted to Modern and Contemporary art. Plans are underway and the 1,500-square-foot Feibes & Schmitt Gallery is scheduled to open in summer 2017.
"We are honored to feature highlights from the initial gift of sixty works that Werner has so generously donated to the Museum," said Erin Coe, Director of The Hyde Collection. "Werner wants the collection he and Jim spent a lifetime building to be seen and appreciated, providing an extraordinary opportunity for our community to engage with and experience the art of our time."
Transforming The Hyde: The Feibes & Schmitt Gift includes works by Grace Hartigan, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Motherwell, David Smith, Bridget Riley, and Andy Warhol. The show offers outstanding examples of non-objective art, Pop art, Minimalism, and abstract art, each of which speaks to Feibes and Schmitt's tastes.
"Werner and Jim collected with a zeal for the modern, free from the constraints of the past, said Jonathan Canning, Curator of The Hyde. While this collection helps to build a bright future for The Hyde, this exhibition encourages us to have faith in the creative possibilities of the future, as well."
