BOWNESS-ON-WINDERMERE.- From Friday 10 February until Sunday 18 June 2017,
Blackwell, Britains leading Arts and Crafts House, welcomes a new exhibition by up and coming artists Griet Beyaert and Paul Miller. Collaboratively known as The Glass Cyphers, Beyaert and Millers exhibition at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, consists of a site-responsive glass, sound and video installation.
The Light Within is a fusion of glass-making and digital technology, using video and sound recordings made in and around Blackwell. The installation, inspired by the use of light in Baillie Scotts architecture, brings together the architectural features of Blackwell with its unique setting overlooking Windermere.
Presented in the Oliver Thompson Gallery, this immersive response to Blackwell is made of a multi-layered video projection-mapped onto sculpted glass works and accompanied by a soundscape. Around the historic interior are freeform sculptural glass works by Beyaert, placed by the artist to draw further attention to the beautifully carved wooden interior and stained glass windows that root Blackwell in its Lakeland location.
The artists commented: We were inspired by the way the spectacular landscape and light from outside weaves its way through the building, magically illuminating the interior and leading us along its fascinating pathways.
This movement of light is echoed by the way that the projected video washes over and through the diaphanous, crystalline forms of Beyarts glass sculptures.
Curator, Kerri Offord commented: Griet and Pauls work echoes the Arts & Crafts ethos that we treasure at Blackwell, using traditional techniques and new technology to create beautiful works inspired by nature. Their response to the intricacy of Baillie Scotts design and the beautiful surroundings of Windermere presents a new interpretation of the House for 2017.
Designed by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott as a holiday home for his clients, today Blackwell is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts houses in the country. With beautiful interiors, regular temporary exhibits, a welcoming tea room and wonderful views across Windermere, Blackwell is open daily from 10.30am 4pm.
