SÃO PAULO.- The vivid colors and artsy designs present in São Paulo, Brazil, are definitely one of a kind. Crowded streets, busy life, happy night life with hundreds of friends enjoying
online gaming. These are just a few of the things that remind us of how unique the South American country can be. There is art in every single corner of the biggest city in Latin America. Whether you prefer exhibits, such as the ones provided by MASP, the iconic museum of São Paulo, right downtown, or the graffiti present in several buildings and walls.
The Brazilian couple of graffiti artists Osgemeos brought an unpublished solo exhibition to New York. "The Silence of Music" premiered last September 8 at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery and ran until October 22. The exhibition pays homage to the music. In the "B-Boy" room, for example, there were radios paintings with built-in speakers that reproduce bands linked to the imaginary on the screens, which sometimes remind us of
slot games, as well as interactive sculptures that play vinyl records.
According to the brothers Gustavo and Otávio Pandolfo, the show was bound to "offer a multisensory experience" for those who enjoy graffiti. This whole exhibit in New York has an even more special meaning now that the new major of São Paulo refuses to allow graffiti in several locations of town, even though the last major paid for the work to be done in certain areas of the city.
The Brazilian brothers have transformed the five rooms of the New York gallery into a facility that brings together drawing, collage, sculptures and audiovisual elements, with paintings and objects that cover the walls from floor to ceiling. According to the publicity material, the show was"a mixture of folk art, pop culture and urban debris". The brothers have changed the way see graffiti and keep fighting for more space in the richest city of South America.
