Ukrainian Institute of America opens selling exhibition of works by Mykhailo Deyak
Mykhailo Deyak, Flower I. Genesis series.

NEW YORK, NY.- Art at the Institute announced Mykhailo Deyak: Recent Works, a selling exhibition pfresenting twenty-two paintings and wall reliefs by Kyiv-based artist Mykhailo Deyak. Two groups of works are being introduced: a series of painted metal wall-constructions — Flowers, and a suite of paintings on glass — Space. Both groups admit to a recent departure from the familiar expressionist representational paintings for which Deyak is known, and turn to ruminative inquiries and explorations of the literal beginnings of creation.organized in cooperation with Voloshyn Gallery (Kyiv, Ukraine).

In Flowers, metallic sheets are formed to suggest floral shapes, but, can also be understood as cosmological suppositions for explosive dispersions – the Big Bang, if one allows. Spaces reveals brusk pictures painted on glass — a traditional medium used in Transcarpathian practice of glass art iconography — minimalistic landscapes, at times exposing diminished human-like and plant allusions, emphasizing the grandeur and scale of the horizon and beyond.

Mykhailo Deyak hails originally from Ukraine’s Transcarpathian region, where he studied at the Uzhhorod State Arts and Crafts College. His artworks have been exhibited internationally, and are represented in private and institutional collections in Ukraine, Canada, China, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, and the US. He lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Curated by Walter Hoydysh, PhD, Director of Art at the Institute, together with Max and Julia Voloshyn of Voloshyn Gallery, this exhibition marks the artist’s second appearance with The Ukrainian Institute of America, and his first solo showing.

Mykhailo Deyak’s works were featured in Voloshyn Gallery’s booth at this season’s running of SCOPE Art Show (NYC) held at The Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, March 2–5.
