EDINBURGH.- A major exhibition will be unveiled this weekend across two Scottish galleries which showcases the best of fine art photography in the country.

‘Ambit: Photographies from Scotland’, which opened on Saturday, sees Scotland’s two public photography galleries - Stills in Edinburgh and Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow - collaborating for the first time on a jointly held exhibition providing a unique platform for the work of 10 artists, five at each venue.

The artists include:

• Glasgow-based street photographer Donnie MacLean (Street Level) whose series, ‘Sealed with a Glasgow Kiss’, features atmospheric black and white images which capture the uncertainly and isolation of urban life

• Margaret Mitchell (Street Level) whose series ‘In This Place’ features striking portraits of young people in the streets where they live, posing questions about family, home, environment and social mobility

• Lorna Macintyre (Stills) who has used San Pellegrino soft drinks as part of the process of making ‘Solid Objects (Roma)’, silver gelatin prints of ancient artefacts from the Capitoline Museum in Rome.

• Edinburgh-based Eden Hawkins, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2016 and combines physical image-making and digital manipulation to create playful pictures using domestic objects.

Ben Harman, director of Stills said: “There are so many artists using photography in interesting ways in Scotland, and so few opportunities for them to show their work to a wider public. ‘Ambit’ is about celebrating the most interesting, innovative work being made in Scotland, whether by brand new graduates or by artists who are further ahead in their careers.

“The curatorial approach taken by Stills was to highlight variety and include examples of innovative and imaginative practice by artists and photographers at different stages of their careers.”

Malcolm Dickson, artistic director of Street Level Photoworks, said: “We looked for imagemakers whose practice we were familiar with but who needed to be teased out more so their work can be shared with a wider public. The title refers to the range or parameters of something - in this case, photography as a means of artistic expression.”

“The exhibition will be presented across both of Scotland’s public venues dedicated to photography as a joint venture, embracing some of the current tendencies and innovative talent from the art photography sector in Scotland.”
