NEW YORK, NY.- Offer Waterman, one of London’s leading galleries for 20th Century British, Post-War and Contemporary Art, announced their participation at TEFAF New York. The gallery will be presenting a selection of exceptional works by influential and internationally acclaimed British Masters including Frank Auerbach, David Hockney, Henry Moore and William Turnbull.
The gallery is widely acknowledged for its expertise with important, historic works by David Hockney, opening their new Mayfair gallery space in 2015 with an acclaimed exhibition of early works on paper by the artist. To coincide with the current Tate retrospective, Offer Waterman will be exhibiting three rarely shown drawings and one painting, including Viareggio (1962) and Coloured Head with Straight Black Hair, Egypt (1963). These formative works both date from the period after Hockney had graduated from the R.C.A, and they demonstrate Hockney’s early virtuosity of line and inventiveness. They are offered for sale at TEFAF with prices in the region of £120,000 - £350,000.
The gallery will also be showing a large selection of works by Henry Moore including Small Maquette No.1 for Reclining Figure (1950), a study for one of Moore’s most treasured monumental works, Reclining Figure: Festival which recently sold at auction for a record £24,722,500. Several important examples of Moore’s celebrated shelter drawings which documented the London underground shelters of World War II will also be for sale including Two Women and Children (1941). Two Half Figures (1934) was gifted by the artist to Julian Trevelyan.
Offer Waterman opened his first gallery space in Chelsea, London in 1996. Now based in a five-storey building in the heart of Mayfair, the gallery has developed an international reputation for offering some of the most exceptional 20th Century and Contemporary artworks to come on the market.
Previously the historic William Morris & Co showroom, the new gallery at St. George Street, provides a reposeful and understated exhibition space across three floors, with a library and research centre on the fourth. Offer Waterman places considerable importance on the production and delivery of historical exhibitions. As the gallery celebrates its twentieth year, it will endeavour to implement a dynamic exhibition programme, assist private and institutional collections in acquiring art of lasting value and continue its representation at the major international art fairs.
Since 2015, Offer Waterman has exclusively represented the Estate of William Turnbull and will be showing an excellent selection of works on paper and small sculptures including the recently discovered and exuberant calligraphic drawing Untitled (1959). Small Female Figure (1979), is one of several bronze sculptures dating from the late 1970s and early 1980s which reveal a new, drastic direction in Turnbull’s work following his retrospective at the Tate in 1973; ‘I felt up to here with my own sculpture and had a tremendous drive to start at the beginning again instead of adding on and developing pieces. So I changed the scale completely and started doing very small things.’ These sculptures would go on to inform much of his later and larger sculptural work.
