SYRACUSE, NY.- The Erie Canal Museum announces the opening of a summer-long exhibition of photographs by Commodore Robert Graham of Rochester, New York. Erie Canal Abstract: Pictures at an Expedition opened on Wednesday, May 10 at the Erie Canal Museum, 318 Erie Boulevard East, Syracuse, New York.
Graham took the photographs with abstract imagery in mind while on a 2015 trip along the Erie Canal. The works, from a book by the same name, are on display in the Museum's Link Gallery through August, 2017. Graham is the author of several other books of photography, including Three Generations on the Erie Canal, whose works were exhibited at the Museum several years ago. Both books are in the library of the museum.
Robert Graham (b.1954) was four years old when his father took him for his first boat ride on the Erie Canal. His grandfather was a tugboat captain on the canal who often took his grandson with him. Graham was captivated by the reflective images he saw along the way. He began photographing what he saw when he was ten. The photographs in Erie Canal Abstract were taken during a voyage along New York State's historic waterway in September of 2015. He spent the early months of 2016 in the digital dark room trying to realize in the pictures what he saw as possibilities during the journey. His companions during that time included Monet, Pissarro, Pollock, Rothko, Richter, Rodchenko; Mahler and Schnittke.
Graham's other books from Blurb Publishing are: CONSTRUCTIVISM; PALACES PARTIALLY DESTROYED; and GOLF CAN BE MURDER.
