NEW YORK, NY.- Christies announces the spring sale of Design taking place on June 7, 2017, at Rockefeller Plaza. The comprehensive auction encompasses over 100 works across all major Design movements of the 20th and 21st centuries with representation from some of the most iconic names in design from notable private collections.
Leading the sale is Marc Newson (B. 1963), Pod of Drawers, designed in 1987 (estimate: $700,000-1,000,000), the companion piece to his earlier Lockheed Lounge of 1986, a dynamic and energetic form created from sculpted fiberglass and covered with non-overlapping sheets of aluminum. The Pod and the Lockheed share a metallic, visual weightlessness and a rounded, hourglass form that references the antique while remaining strikingly modern. Offered in this sale is one of the earliest examples of the Pod of Drawers, distinguished from later versions by the complex stud-work of rivets delivering a mosaic of aluminum fragments, each filed, applied, and polished by hand.
Featured private collections include The Tuttleman Collection, comprising two pairs of Francois-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008), Moutons de Pierre, designed circa 1979 (estimate per pair: $200,000-300,000); and Wendell Castle (B. 1932), Chair with Sport Coat, 1978 (estimate: $12,000-18,000); The Joel Schur Collection of Important Works by Gallé, encompassing rare-to-market examples of Gallés mold-blown and cameo glass, such as A Rare and Important Elephant Vase, circa 1925 (estimate: $100,000-150,000); and A Rare and Important Wisteria Table Lamp, circa 1920 (estimate: $200,000-250,000); and Beauty and Light Works by Tiffany Studios from a Private Collection, presenting an array of glassworks by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
Additionally, a remarkable selection of late 19th-through-early-20th century works come from The Estate of Richard J. Schwartz, featuring a leaded glass window by John La Farge (1835-1910), A Moon Over Clouds Window, 1881 (estimate: $60,000-80,000).
Other highlights include iconic works by renowned Post Modern designers, such as Francois Pompon (1855-1933), Ours Polaire, 1923, a figural polar bear carved from a single block of white marble (estimate: $400,000-600,000); Paul Evans (1931-1987), A Forged-Front Wall-Mounted Cabinet, 1976 (estimate: $80,000-120,000); and intricate objets dart by designers such as Claude Lalanne (B. 1924) including her A Table Mirror, designed in the 1960s (estimate: $20,000-30,000); and An Evening Bag, circa 1986 (estimate; $4,000-6,000).
