DALLAS, TX.- Heritage Auctions' Vintage Sports Photography auction documents the highs and lows of nearly a century of New York Yankees history, featuring some of the most recognizable images ever to derive from the storied franchise. Carefully curated to just 140 lots, the auction is now open for Internet-only bidding, and will close in Extended Bidding format on Saturday May 20th. Initial bids must be placed by 10 PM Central time on Saturday night.

"New York City is, of course, the media capital of the world," noted Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. "So it's little wonder that the greatest sports photographs ever captured often derive from that location. And certainly the New York Yankees have provided plenty of memorable moments worthy of the film."

The legendary Babe Ruth launches his record-snapping sixtieth home run of the 1927 season in one of the event's most popular entries, expected to garner a winning bid in excess of $8,000. Roger Maris does him one better in 1961, and we can spot the historic sixty-first in flight in a compelling "Associated Press" image snapped in the Bronx that day. Joltin' Joe DiMaggio finally comes up empty in a 1941 news photo documenting the end of his historic fifty-six-game hitting streak, and Don Larsen finalizes his perfect game in one of the post-war era's most famous sports images.

But there were tears that flowed in the Bronx when the champagne did not, most notably as a terminally ill Lou Gehrig retired as baseball's "Luckiest Man" in 1939. Nine years later, a dying Babe Ruth likewise bade farewell to a heartbroken full house at Yankee Stadium.
