In addition to teaching and practicing Carles Muro has continuously contributed to the architectural debate through writings and publications.

PORTO.- Architect Carles Muro will be the first Adjunct Curator of Architecture Programmes of the Serralves Museum. This new position has been created to recognize the growing importance of architecture as part of the Museum’s artistic programme, in the wake of the gift of 40 projects from the Archive of Álvaro Siza and the institutional collaboration between the Serralves Foundation, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.

Working with the Director of the Serralves Museum, the Adjunct Curator will advise on the ongoing treatment of and access to the Siza Archive and its contextualization relative to contemporary architecture, contribute to the exhibitions and public programmes for the Museum and advise on the future development of the museum´s collection of architecture related archives, as well as to expand the Museum’s network of specialist partners, both nationally and internationally.

Serralves Museum Director, Suzanne Cotter said: “Carles Muro brings deep knowledge of architecture as practice and history together with a close engagement with the work of Álvaro Siza and the Portuguese and international architecture communities. As Serralves’ first Adjunct Curator of Architectural Programmes he will play a vital role in advancing our work in promoting awareness, discussion and debate on architecture and its relation to contemporary art, society and culture, and in reinforcing the central role of architecture at Serralves as part of it physical DNA.”

Carles Muro was born in Barcelona in 1964. He studied architecture at the ETSA Barcelona, where he graduated in 1991, and worked with Elías Torres and José A. Martínez Lapeña in Barcelona (1987-1991) and Álvaro Siza in Porto (1992-1993), before setting up in private practice in 1993. Built projects include the Public Market in Inca (Majorca), and the Health Care Centres in Castellar del Vallès and Tordera, near Barcelona. The work of his practice has been extensively exhibited and published worldwide.

Muro was Unit Master at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (London, 1996-1998) and Director of the Masters Programme “Arquitectura: Crítica y Proyecto” at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona, 1998-2002). He is currently an Associate Professor of Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and has taught Architectural History and Architectural Design at the ETSA Barcelona (1993-2015).

In addition to teaching and practicing he has continuously contributed to the architectural debate through writings and publications. He has served as member of the editorial and advisory board of several architectural periodicals and co-director of the “Pre-Textos de Arquitectura” book series. A selection of his writings was collected in the volume “Arquitecturas Fugaces” (Lampreave, Madrid, 2007).
