MEXICO CITY.- This past June 30th 21 works of art produced by the prominent contemporary artist Bosco Sodi (Mexico City, 1970) were presented in the exhibition “Through the Centuries of Centuries” at the National Museum of Art (Munal). The event, which was organized through the support of the National Institute of Fine Arts in synthesis with the Secretariat of Culture, will continue through November 5th, 2017 on the first and second floor.s

The works of art intend to highlight through ‘dialogues’ the formal qualities ranging from texture and color to the materials and customs that comprise the Munal’s permanent collection which is conformed of pieces from the vice-royal period to some from the 20th Century and Sodi’s use of matter, materials and color that are site specific for their relationship to the pieces they interchange with.

Gabriela Baz, the director of the Munal stated that exhibit stands out for its attractive exploration of matter, unique in its support of two-dimensional and three -dimensional pieces, that permit new ways to see the museum’s collection through a ‘trans-historic dialogue’.

Bosco Sodi said, “without a doubt this will be the most important exposition for which I have participated with in Mexico. It is an honor for me to be able to share space and dialogues with works of art by artists of such renowned standing.”

Sodi stands out in contemporary genres for creating an esthetic proposition that explores the areas in which nature and humanity combine. Each of his pieces give a sense of spirituality through their material, color, juxtaposition, relationship and positioning with the pieces they are associated with.

Amongst some of the pieces exhibited are a group of 100 red, yellow and orange poly-chromed volcanic rocks from the Ceboruco Volcano in Nayarit that address the oil painting by José Juárez ‘The Martyrdom of St. Laurence’; another volcanic rock covered with ceramic paint and bathed in gold that is placed in the gallery next to works of art by José María Velasco named ‘Rocks’; baked clay cubes that share a space with the sculpture of St. Sebastian by Felipe Valero; an oil painting of mixed techniques in tones of blue that conjugate with the work of art by Ángel Zárraga ‘The Magi’, as well as 19 golden volcanic rocks that form a synergy with the piece ‘Portrait of a Lady’ by Baltasar de Echave Orio, amongst many others.

Together with the exhibition will be an inaugural tour on Wednesday, July 26th at 7:00 PM given by the curators from the National Art Museum which invites the public to reflect and upon the exhibition from the esthetic experience, analysis and the exchange of knowledge between the distinct disciplines.

On Wednesday, August 20th at 7:00 PM Miriam Barrón García, visual artist and coordinator of projects between the Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City and the National Autonomous University, will conduct a conference called ‘Bridges and dialogues between art from the 19th Century and Contemporary Art’.

The scenic and body artist Tania Solomonof will offer an interdisciplinary investigation between body and esthetics through the process of creation, identity and collective memory though a contemporary dance on Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 PM with ‘Interpretations through Dance’.

‘Interpretation from Art and Literature’ is the title of the event which will be held on Wednesday, October 25th at 7:00 PM by Susana Santoyo, who besides writing about art also delves in thoughts of sculpting and architecture as well the space and its limits and representations.

In addition, there will be five sessions offering opportunities for academics, artists and the public to get together and exchange, share and discuss ideas that offer the possibility for a more enrichening dialogue about art. The first one ‘Inaugural Conversation’ will be on Friday, July 28th at 7:00 PM at the Fundación Casa Wabi in Santa Maria. The following four ‘Visual Discussion, Study and Analysis’ on Friday, August 4th at 7:00 PM; ‘Criticography of Contemporary Art’ on Friday, August 11th at 7:00 PM; ‘Contemporary Fronts: The Convergences between the Vice-regal, 19th Century Art, and Current Artistic Practices’ on Friday, August 18th at 7:00 PM; and ‘Creative Acts and Processes’ on Friday, September 1st at 7:00 PM will be held at the Reception area of the National Art Museum in Mexico City.

On Thursday, October 12th at 7:00 PM Bosco Sodi will offer a closing conference for a limited audience of 50 people that is free to the public at the Reception area of the National Art Museum in Mexico City.
