First edition of art berlin opens with 110 international galleries from 16 countries

BERLIN.- The first edition of art berlin is now open. From 14-17 September 2017, the new art fair hosts 110 international galleries from 16 countries presenting a comprehensive overview of the current art market, from emerging and established contemporary positions up to works of Modern art. art berlin has emerged from a partnership between abc art berlin contemporary and Art Cologne and is organized by Koelnmesse.

The range of presented artworks reflects the diversity of the galleries taking part in art berlin. In addition to the return of several galleries who formerly participated in abc, such as Galerie Guido W. Baudach, Bo Bjerggaard, Mehdi Chouakri, Galerie Eigen + Art, Konrad Fischer Galerie, Future Gallery, Galerie Max Hetzler, Galleri Magnus Karlsson, Klemm´s, König Galerie, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Meyer Riegger, Galerie Tobias Naehring, Galerie Neu, neugerriemschneider, Piktogram, Deborah Schamoni Galerie, Esther Schipper, Dittrich + Schlechtriem, Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Galerie Thomas Schulte, Gabriele Senn Galerie, Sies + Höke, Société, Sprüth Magers and Wentrup, numerous young galleries are showing here for the first time, including: Sandy Brown, Edmond Gallery, Galerie Kai Erdmann, Filiale (Bärbel Grässlin, Marina Rüdiger, Klaus Webelholz), Gillmeier Rech, Philipp Haverkampf Galerie, Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, Leslie, Nino Mier Gallery, Roberto Paradise, PPC Phillip Pflug Contemporary, Katharina Maria Raab, Sexauer, Galerie Bene Taschen and Weiss Berlin.

The addition of Modern Art expands the scope of art berlin to include historical positions, presented by galleries such as Galerie Klaus Benden, Dierking - Galerie am Paradeplatz, Fischer Kunsthandel + Edition, Galerie Klaus Gerrit Friese, Galerie Michael Haas, Ikeda Gallery, Galerie Jahn und Jahn, Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel, Galerie Georg Nothelfer, Aurel Scheibler, Schönewald, Galerie Michael Schultz, Galerie Schwarzer, Setareh and Walter Storms Galerie.

Alongside many group presentations presenting a cross-section of the gallery’s program, 30 solo shows highlight the work of one artist, including presentations by Awst + Walther (PSM), John Bock (Sprüth Magers), Adriano Costa (Supportico Lopez), Mark Dion (Galerie Nagel Draxler), Buck Ellison (Balice Hertling), Axel Hütte (Daniel Marzona), Robert Holyhead (Galerie Max Hetzler), Azade Köker (Zilberman), Heinz Mack (Samuelis Baumgarte), Anna McCarthy (Sperling), and Haegue Yang (Barbara Wien) amongst others.

One component of art berlin is a diverse program of events that niche Berlin has worked with a number of artists to develop: this includes talks and performances at art berlin or film screenings at Kino Babylon, shamanic journeys through the city and a visit to the Landesarchiv. The programmed activities also encompass visits to various artist’s studios and project spaces, inviting visitors to engage with the artists’ ways of working and thinking. Participating in this program are Eli Cortinas, Mariechen Danz, Annabel Daou, Peles Empire, Jean-Pascal Flavien, Uwe Henneken, Gregor Hildebrandt, Lisa Holzer, Michael Kleine, Pablo Larios, Michel Majerus Estate, Sophie Reinhold, Vanessa Safavi, Karin Sander, Tomás Saraceno, Slavs & Tatars, Simon Starling and Suse Weber.

Gallery openings
On Friday evening, the Berlin-based galleries participating in art berlin invite you to a gallery walk through town to take in outstanding exhibition openings showcasing internationally renowned artists, with galleries remaining open until 9 pm. Included in the exhibitions on display are: Saâdane Afif (Mehdi Chouakri), Norbert Bisky (König Galerie), Katinka Bock (Meyer Riegger), Cornel Brudascu (Galeria Plan B), Louisa Clement (carlier l gebauer), Andrea Crespo (Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler), Stephan Dillemuth (Galerie Nagel Draxler), Harun Farocki (Galerie Barbara Weiss), Lisa Holzer (Gillmeier Rech), Nadira Husain (PSM), Sergej Jensen (Galerie Neu), Felix Kiessling (Alexander Levy), Barbara Kruger (Sprüth Magers), Gordon Matta-Clark (Galerie Thomas Schulte), Richard Prince (Galerie Max Hetzler), Markus Selg (Galerie Guido W Baudach), Simon Starling (neugerriemschneider) and Fiete Stolte (Helga Maria Klosterfelde Edition).
