CLOSTER, NJ.- On Wednesday, October 4, New Jersey’s fine-estates specialist, Sterling Associates, will auction 267 curated lots of furniture, art, antiques, decorative accessories and Tiffany silver from upscale residences in the New York metro and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Sterling Associates’ owner, Stephen D'Atri, comes from a family that has been involved in the antiques trade for more than 60 years. After graduating from Rutgers University, D’Atri attended the New York School Of Interior Design, then opened his own successful firm, Sterling Restoration and Antique D'zynes. One of his areas of greatest expertise is silver and other metals, which explains why he was so pleased to be able to include such a large selection of Tiffany & Co., sterling silver in his October 4 auction.

Lot 110 comprises a 5-piece luncheon service for 12 from Tiffany’s Faneuil Collection. The gleaming 60-piece sterling silver grouping is expected to make $1,000-$5,000. Also in the Faneuil pattern, Lot 111 consists of 371 pieces, representing nine complete place settings plus six preserve spoons, seven 3-prong forks, and 10 nut picks. Housed in custom-made, felt-lined storage boxes, the hefty sterling lot is estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

Additionally, there are many desirable serving pieces in the Faneuil pattern, including Lot 112, elaborately pierced asparagus tongs weighing 210 grams, est. $200-$2,000; Lot 113, a large, pierced pea-serving spoon weighing 93 grams, $200-$2,000; Lot 115, and a solid, pierced tomato server, 80 grams, $200-$2,000. The long list of superb Tiffany Faneuil wares continues with a pierced asparagus-serving fork; cucumber, macaroni, pastry, waffle and salad servers; a crumb knife, and numerous other serving spoons, forks, ladles, jelly spoons, 5-piece sets of serving knives, and a fish-server set.

Lot 174, an antique Tiffany & Co., sterling silver tray, features a pierced rim and is hallmarked under the base. Its approximate total weight is 492 grams, and it measures 10 5/8 inches in diameter. It comes to auction with a $500-$700 estimate.

A testament to Tiffany silver’s graceful endurance through many decades of style changes and innovation, Lot 177 is a circa-1940 Art Deco compote on an openwork stem with dolphin-and-blossom motif. It is stamped by Tiffany & Co. under the base and also carries the mark for John C. Moore II (1907-1947). Weighing approximately 198 grams, the elegant compote could reach $300-$500 at auction.

Add the ultimate in old Newport style to a dinner party table with Lot 154, a set of 14 Tiffany & Co., sterling silver shell-shape place card holders. With a total weight of approximately 96 grams, the set is entered with a $400-$600 estimate.

Yet another sterling silver highlight is Lot 100, a Kalo hand-hammered coffee and tea service with tray. It is marked Sterling / Hand Wrought at The Kalo Shops / Chicago and New York. A stunning set with a look of its own, it is estimated at $3,000-$6,000.

A wealth of furniture is offered in the sale, and for those who appreciate the modern aesthetic, there are some tempting and very stylish club chairs from which to choose. Lot 228, a pair of large, comfortable German Bauhaus chairs, harkens back to the 1930s/’40s, with (later) textured red upholstery over tubular steel framework and ebonized armrests. This handsome duo carries a $400-$650 estimate. Lot 230 consists of a pair of chic mid-century modern club or armchairs with channeled seat backs and rosewood-veneered geometrical frames. Made in Germany in the 1950s/’60s, these inviting, beautifully reupholstered chairs are designed for relaxation. Estimate: $1,500-$2,000.

Rondelle plaques of silvered and gilt wood depict casino gaming-table scenes in Art Deco style. Offered as a correct pair, Lot 222 is estimated at $500-$700.

The auction is brimming with other highlights, including shipbuilders’ models, nautical instruments, mirrors, rugs, garden architecture, chandeliers and sconces; vintage Cartier salt and peppers, and many other estate discoveries too numerous to mention.
