LOS ANGELES, CA.- Los Angeles Modern Auctions announced the artists offered in the Spring 2018 Auction on Sunday, June 10, 2018.

The auction represents a snapshot of the current collecting trends of Modern and Contemporary fine art and design. It features a carefully curated selection of works by noted artists and designers from around the world. However, especially timely are several works by traditionally underrepresented female makers. Works by Vija Celmins, Ruth Asawa, Helen Pashgian, and Mary Corse are highlights of the auction and illustrate the impressive impact women have had on the art world over the last 60 years.

The painting by Vija Celmins is being offered to the market for the first time since being acquired shortly after the artist’s landmark 1963 graduate show at UCLA. Until recently, her early oil on canvas pieces have largely been overlooked, however, now they are some of the most sought-after works in her oeuvre.

Ruth Asawa’s circa 1965 wire sculpture has also not been seen on the market since it was acquired by legendary architect Edgardo Contini. The work was obtained directly from the artist after it was shown in Asawa’s 1965 solo exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum).

Two works by women involved in the Light and Space movement are also newly offered on the market. Helen Pashgian’s ethereal sculpture from 2006 shows the culmination of this artist’s brilliant career. The curved hybrid of painting and sculpture creates the visual sensation that it’s internally lit. Mary Corse’s minimalist masterpiece from 1988 has been in a private collection in Bel Air, California until this year, when it was specifically sought out by LAMA to offer in this special auction.

Regarding the Corse painting, Peter Loughrey, founder of LAMA, states “this auction was already coming together with important voices from women artists, but we felt it was critical to offer a strong work by Corse at this moment.” Corse is currently preparing for her first solo museum survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, which opens the same week as the LAMA auction.
