SOUTHAMPTON, NY.- In 1978 architect Peter Marino acquired an artwork from his friend Andy Warhol. Since, The Peter Marino Collection has grown to thousands of paintings and mixed media pieces representing some of the most notable artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a select number of which are being presented with Southampton Arts Center in the heart of Southampton Village, N.Y. this summer.

The exhibition, COUNTERPOINT: Selections from The Peter Marino Collection is open from July 28 through September 23.

“These works are one of the largest assemblages of world-class contemporary art displayed publicly on the East End,” said Tom Dunn, Executive Director of Southampton Arts Center. “We couldn’t be more excited for the show or more grateful to Peter Marino for sharing these remarkable works with us.”

A longtime resident of Southampton, Peter Marino’s architectural work includes award-winning residential, retail, cultural, and hospitality projects worldwide. Well known for integrating art within his designs, Marino has commissioned more than 300 site-specific works. COUNTERPOINT continues Marino’s cross disciplinary practice, revealing influences that have shaped the architect’s career and life-long connection to art.

COUNTERPOINT is organized into four thematic chambers designed on site by Peter Marino:

• Gardens Gallery serves as a connection to the Southampton community with a Jason Schmidt photograph of Marino’s Southampton garden, nine bronze Grand Moutons de Peter by Francois-Xavier Lalanne from the garden itself, and a series of screens showing a selection of Marino’s local architectural projects.

• Pop Art Gallery features works by Tom Sachs, Damien Hirst, Joel Morrison, Richard Prince, and Andy Warhol.

• Treasury Room focuses on photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe and Marino’s sculptural bronze boxes.

• Modern German Art Gallery includes a selection of works by Anselm Keifer and Georg Baseliltz.

Among the notable pieces that are on public display for the first time are Glenn Brown’s sculpture, We Reeled in Drunkenly from Outer Space (2014), and Zhang Huan’s painting, Sea No.1 (2011), and in the Pop Art Gallery hangs a watercolor of flowers signed, “To Peter, Andy Warhol.”

“It’s entirely fitting that Peter Marino, who continues to have such an outsized influence on the aesthetics of our community, should also be a preeminent collector of pioneering artists who defined the cultural landscape of their time,” said Simone Levinson, Board of Directors Co-Chair, Southampton Arts Center, “We look forward to sharing this glimpse into his private collection with our visitors.”

Said Marino, “I am very glad to have this opportunity to bring a part of my art legacy to the community of Hamptonites that shares my love of this wondrous sand dune in the sea.”
