HONG KONG.- Sun Museum is presenting an exhibition of “Hong Kong Modern Sketches” from today to 20 October 2018. On display are 56 sketch works showing how fourteen local artists apply traditional and innovative approaches to the depiction of forms with simple lines and colours.

It is often said that sketching is the foundation of painting. However, as a common medium in the artistic scene, little attention has been given to it. Today, Chinese traditional line drawing has been recognised as an independent art form. However, sketches are not popularly exhibited in Hong Kong. Hence this exhibition is organised to promote the new trends of sketching. The participating artists are from various age groups. They are LIU Cheng Mui, TSUI Yuen, ZHU Da Cheng, SHEN Ping HAU Siu Ching, HO Siu Chung Alex, LAM Man Kong, ZENG Da Mao, TSE Ching, CHEUK Hiu Kwong, POON Yeuk Fai, YIU Chu Tung, WU Chun Yin Aries and LUI Wa. These artists have developed simply drawings into a fascinating art form which can proficiently express both external forms and internal feelings.

In particular, Liu Cheng Mui’s sketches are reconstructions of visual memories. The figures in her works look like dancing on paper. TSUI Yuen draws with a monochromatic pencil to present the contrast of hard and soft texture, vividly depicting the hardness of food containers versus the softness of food. ZHU Da Cheng just uses a single tool to form intersected lines, presenting three-dimensional figures with spiritual pureness. SHEN Ping excels in depicting light and shade with only one single colour. His sketches are interesting realistic records of compelling sceneries. Poon Yeuk Fai designs his drawings like book illustrations. He depicts his thoughts and ideas behind each piece.

Mr. YEUNG Chun Tong, Director of the Sun Museum expresses: “Sketching is an art of lines. However, the invited artists integrate the techniques of watercolour, ink, oil, print and even sculpture into their sketches, creating an innovative way to express this art form. This is one of the best artistic achievements of Hong Kong.”

An exhibition entitled “Leung Hui Wah: Distant Views of Hong Kong” is concurrently held at the Museum’s corridor gallery. This selection of 30 photographs by Leung Hui Wah features rural Hong Kong in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Some of the sceneries remain, some were gone forever. Nonetheless, viewers can traverse the tranquil landscapes through Leung’s lens, stay away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a moment of spiritual transcendence.
