Private collections lead Heritage Auctions' Design Auction beyond $1 Million
Jean Dunand’s Two Figures, Six-Panel Screen, circa 1928 brought nearly nine times its high pre-auction estimate when numerous bidders drove its final price up to $275,000 to claim top-lot honors.

DALLAS, TX.- The original furniture from Craig Ellwood’s 1957 Hunt House, selections from a Robert Couturier interior and a large group of drawings by noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright led the total from Heritage Auctions’ Oct. 21 Design Auction to $1,071,704.

"The home of Victor and Elizabeth Hunt, perched on the ocean in Malibu, California, remains an important moment in California modern architecture, and Ellwood’s well-published interior shows his work at his best,” Heritage Auctions Director of Design Brent Lewis said. "The works from the Robert Couturier interior were selected from a SoHo, New York, project executed by the renowned interior designer for a long-time client for whom he had completed more than a dozen interiors throughout New York City, the Hamptons, Aspen (Colorado) and Austria. In this collection, Couturier balanced striking European contemporary design with iconic French Art Deco, which led to some exceptional pieces in this auction.”

The highlights from the Couturier Collection include:

Jean Dunand’s Two Figures, Six-Panel Screen, circa 1928 brought nearly nine times its high pre-auction estimate when numerous bidders drove its final price up to $275,000 to claim top-lot honors.

"An important work of contemporary design,” Mattia Bonetti Strata Cabinet, 2004, Editions David Gill sold for $53,750.

Standing 11-1/2 inches high and with a diameter of 54 inches, an Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti Ring Table, 1999 prompted multiple bids until it finished at $40,000, doubling its low pre-auction estimate.

No. 3 in an edition of eight, plus four artist’s proofs, Ingrid Donat Bureau aux Caryatides et Scarifications, 2002 realized $30,000.

The current owners of Ellwood’s Hunt House acquired some of the original furniture from the renowned home at the auction, and will return these works to their original setting in the house after the completion of a full restoration, returning the historic property to its original state.

Among the highlights from the Hunt House:

Multiple bidders pursued a Custom Headboard and Bed from Craig Ellwood's Hunt House, 1958 to more than 11 times its high pre-auction estimate, until it closed at $7,812.50.

A George Nelson Pair of Coconut Lounge Chairs from Craig Ellwood's Hunt House, designed 1955, produced 1957, Herman Miller is another that soared past expectations, more than doubling its low pre-auction estimate at $7,500.

An extremely rare table by Charles and Ray Eames, model 473-T, appearing at auction for the first time, sold for $7,187.50

Among the lots from Frank Lloyd Wright:

Ernst Wasmuth Portfolio (forty-five plates), circa 1911, Ernst Wasmuth Verlag GmbH & Co. is an extraordinary collection of lithograph-on-tissue images that sparked a flurry of bids from more than a dozen collectors before ultimately bringing $27,500.

Multiple bidders also made a play for Drawings and Renderings for the John L. Rayward House, New Canaan, Connecticut (eighteen works), circa 1955, steering its final price to more than triple its high pre-auction estimate, ending at $18,750.

Nearly a dozen collectors made bids on Drawings and Renderings of the Louis B. Frederick House (forty-three works), circa 1958 , helping it nearly triple its high pre-auction estimate when it went for $16,875.

Other top lots included, but were not limited to:

· Large Four-Piece White Persian Group with Black Lip Wrap, 1988 by Dale Chihuly: $13,125

· William Morris Artifact Series #9 (Burial), 1989: $12,500
