HELSINKI.- HAM Helsinki Art Museum continues its focus of exhibiting internationally renowned contemporary artists with Gilbert & George: THE MAJOR EXHIBITION. It is their first significant exhibition held in the Nordic countries during the last two decades and showcases pictures exhibited for the first time in Finland.
THE MAJOR EXHIBITION consists over 50 pictures created between 1991 and 2016, consisting pictures from 10 major groups of pictures including "NEW DEMOCRATIC PICTURES," "NAKED SHIT PICTURES," "JACK FREAK PICTURES," "SCAPEGOATING PICTURES" and "UTOPIAN PICTURES." The most represented pictures in this exhibition series are from their most recent "THE BEARD PICTURES," which includes the extraordinary triptych OLD BEARD RUIN (2016) of over 20 metres in length.
The exhibition has both been curated and the installation designed by Gilbert & George. The presentation of pictures is neither chronological, nor thematical, rather a powerful and unique composition of art installed in the two monumental upper floor galleries at the functionalist 1930s Tennis Palace building.
In addition to the works in the exhibition, free screening of the emblematic films The Singing Sculpture (1991) by Philip Haas and the feature length The World of Gilbert & George (1981) by Gilbert & George will be on view at the HAM auditorium throughout the duration of the exhibition starting from 16th October 2018.
