NEW ROCHELLE, NY.- The City of New Rochelle continues to expand its public art offerings as part of its downtown transformation with the recent completion of the Overpass Illuminated Art Project, “Radiant Passage,” a multidimensional art installation located at the overpass of North Ave. & Memorial Highway.

Oshi Rabin, the leading artist of the Public & Urban Art team at New Rochelle’s Mahlstedt Gallery, designed the overpass’s LED interactive mural and led the project’s installation in collaboration with muralist Misha Tyutyunik.

Spearheaded by New Rochelle’s Department of Development, the project was initiated last Fall with an open request to artists throughout the region to design an innovative, dynamic and contemporary art light installation to highlight a critical gateway to the downtown, improve pedestrian safety by eliminating the blighted conditions of the overpass, and inspire pride within the community.

The multidimensional art installation is comprised of two painted murals on both sides of the walls that make up the overpass with geometric imagery and colors. Sharply focused projectors illuminate the murals with highly programmable lights that automatically turn on at night. The projection will offer one of 16.7 million color possibilities that will largely be static and reflect colors associated with holidays and special occasions throughout the year.

“The completion of this exciting public art project not only brings a new entryway to New Rochelle’s downtown, but also serves as a gateway to the redevelopment activity currently underway,” said New Rochelle’s Commissioner of Development Luiz Aragon. “Our goal with the downtown redevelopment initiative is it beautify the City and make it a more walkable, vibrant downtown. The overpass project links new development to other parts of the City, helping to foster connectivity and city-wide cohesiveness.”

The Overpass Illuminated Art Project is New Rochelle’s latest initiative to bring more public art Downtown. In September, the City celebrated the addition of 15 custom NRNY sculptures designed as part of the “Stacked!” series, which began in July with the unveiling of two pieces by Charles and Heather Fazzino.
