MFA Boston appoints Michelle Millar Fisher as Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts
Fisher is currently the Louis C. Madeira IV Assistant Curator of European Decorative Arts and Design at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

BOSTON, MASS.- The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, announced today that Michelle Millar Fisher has been appointed as the Ronald C. and Anita L. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts. Fisher will begin her position on July 1, joining the MFA’s Department of Contemporary Art, led by Reto Thüring, to develop exhibitions and grow and care for the Museum’s collection of contemporary craft, decorative art and design.

“Michelle is a brilliant curator, a dedicated teacher and scholar, and an emphatic community builder. She will bring the vision, energy and collaborative spirit to Boston and the MFA that will help write an exciting next chapter for contemporary decorative art, craft and design,” said Thüring, Beal Family Chair, Department of Contemporary Art.

Fisher is currently the Louis C. Madeira IV Assistant Curator of European Decorative Arts and Design at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she is working on the upcoming exhibition Designs for Different Futures, organized collaboratively with the Walker Art Center and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as a new display of 19th-century European decorative arts. From 2014 to 2018, she was a Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), where she worked on, among others, the exhibitions Design and Violence; This Is for Everyone: Design Experiments for the Common Good; From the Collection, 1960–1969; and, most recently, Items: Is Fashion Modern? and its accompanying catalogue. Fisher is finishing her dissertation at the Graduate Center, The City University of New York, with a concentration in modern architectural history of the 20th century.

Additionally, Fisher has worked as an independent curator presenting collaborative exhibitions at institutions including muca-Roma, Mexico City, and ABC No Rio, New York; Museum Researcher & Writer at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Currier Museum of Art; Research Intern in the Department of Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and as an Artist’s Assistant to Andy Goldsworthy.

“I am delighted to be joining the MFA, a world-class institution that is neighbor to so many thriving and exciting centers of contemporary cross-disciplinary practice in Boston—including several I have enjoyed collaborating with in the past, like the MIT Media Lab,” said Fisher. “I am really looking forward to becoming part of Reto’s team and am inspired by his vision for the Contemporary department.”
