NEW YORK, NY.- Phillips announced the appointment of Elizabeth Goldberg as a Senior International Specialist of American Art and Deputy Chairman, Americas. She will start in her new role in July.

Considered by many to be among the world’s leading experts in American Art, Ms. Goldberg joins Phillips from Sotheby’s, where she was most recently Chairman of American Art. During her tenure at Sotheby’s, she also served as a Senior Vice President of Impressionist & Modern Art. While at Sotheby’s, Ms. Goldberg was responsible for the sale of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, which sold for $44 million, setting a world record for a work by a woman artist at auction, as well as Norman Rockwell’s Saying Grace, which set a world record for the artist at $46 million. Before joining Sotheby’s, she was Vice President and Head of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture at Christie’s in Los Angeles.

“Attracting Elizabeth to Phillips is a major coup for us,” said Edward Dolman, Chief Executive Officer. “As the foremost authority on American Art in the auction world, she will help us expand our reach in American Art, an increasingly important focus for our company as we expand our offerings further back in the 20th century. Her significant experience and passion for engaging with collectors, along with an intimate understanding of the art market, will make her a terrific addition to our team.”

Ms. Goldberg will broaden the company’s scope of offerings as the company places a greater emphasis on Modern and Post-War art. A well-regarded industry veteran, she will strengthen the company’s team of international specialists and broaden the range of expertise it offers collectors. While based in New York, she will also spend a great deal of time in London developing relationships with clients and collectors in Europe.

As a key member of the global leadership team, Ms. Goldberg will be responsible for generating consignments and selling the 20th Century & Contemporary Art sales on a global basis, with an emphasis on strengthening Phillips’ active client base in the American Art category. She will also work to promote the Phillips brand internationally, supporting and leading cross-departmental business getting and brand initiatives to develop a network of top collectors and clients across all of Phillips selling categories.
