LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.- Some of the most memorable events, people and places of Los Angeles’ sports history are on display in the unprecedented photography exhibition “Play by Play: A Century of Sports Photography, 1889-1989,” at the Central Library’s Getty Gallery and First Floor Galleries, 630 W. Fifth St., downtown, through March 27, 2005. “Play by Play” is the first time such a comprehensive photographic history of the Los Angeles sports scene is on exhibit. Curated by longtime Los Angeles sports writer David Davis, this display features more than 200 images culled from the Library’s 2.7 million-photograph collection. The selected photographs include original file photos from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and other local newspapers. Through images, many of which have not been seen by the public in over a century, the exhibit reveals not only the diverse culture of sports in Los Angeles, but also the central role that sports play in the city’s history: the city has hosted seven Super Bowls – including the first Super Bowl in 1967– and two Summer Olympic Games. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Anaheim Angels have played 10 World Series, and the world’s greatest soccer players have gathered for three World Cup tournaments—all in Los Angeles. A companion book of the exhibit, “Play by Play: Los Angeles Sports Photography 1889-1989,” by David Davis and published by Angel City Press, is available at the Library Store and features the top images from the exhibit.
