Renaissance to Rococo: Masterpieces Opens
Michael Sweerts (Flemish, 1624-64), Boy with a Hat, c. 1655-56, oil on panel, The Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection Fund, Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.

OMAHA, NEBRASKA.- This amazing exhibition features 60 of the most acclaimed works from the renowned collection of old master paintings of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, America’s oldest public art museum. The Atheneum’s recent plans for an expansion provided it with a rare opportunity to share its treasures with the North American public and Joslyn was honored to be the only Midwestern museum included in this unprecedented tour.

Spanning the 15th through the 18th centuries, Renaissance to Rococo features exquisite masterpieces by Italian, Spanish, Northern (Dutch and Flemish), French, and English artists including Caravaggio, Gainsborough, Goya, Strozzi, Tiepolo, Van Dyck, and Vouet. The subjects of these celebrated works range from glimpses of everyday life and lessons in morals to mythological stories and the fabled lives of the saints. From the most massive (11 x 6 feet) to the smallest scale (11 x 14 inches) each work is a brilliant example of the skill, originality, and influence of those artists called the “old masters”.
