BROOKLYN, NY.- Janet Borden, Inc. announced 13 Colors, a new installation of work by Hanno Otten. This extraordinary installation is a new development of Otten's work, based on his Farbenlehre, Colorblocks, and Lichtbilder series. Pure vivid color is Ottens language.
In these photographs, Otten literally dissects color photography and uses the individual elements to create unique images. Lush bands of color hang from the wall in this installation, surrounding the room in a wild physical cacophony. Ottens new work continues to explore the abstract, with new approaches and refinements.
Once again he manipulates color and light to create a modern palette of vivid hues. As in his earlier work, Otten insists on the primacy of color, forgoing any literal or narrative interpretation. His work builds on the color studies of earlier artists whose interest in color perception paved the way for his projects. In this installation, the colors are perceived differently, depending not only on the light and time of day, but on the adjacent panels. Individual images which might evoke landscape imagery, celestial views, or even a bowl of cereal, are entirely from the viewers imagination.
Technically, the work is culled from hundreds of photographs of Otten's paintings. Thirteen individual color groups of twelve photographs, each 40x30 cm (16x12,) are arranged throughout the gallery. They are an immersive group of delicious and intense hues. Within each is a variety of other colors, not just from the literal composition of color, but splashes of color from paint or other real elements.
Hanno Otten was born in 1954, and lives in Cologne. His work has been exhibited worldwide, in such locations as Leipzig, Cologne, Los Angeles, and New York. He is also known for sculpture and installation pieces, which are available through the gallery.
