Go Where the Art Is: Must-See U.S. Cities for Art Lovers

73% of Americans believe that art is a positive experience in a generally troubled world, according to Americans for the Arts. Given that there are countless new art installations and galleries around the U.S., there’s definitely plenty of fantastic art to see. A great way to see these artistic feats is to take to the road and see different creative or celebrated artistic spots in different states. So, which U.S. cities should you add to your road trip map if you're an art lover?

Charleston, SC
Once you've chosen the right vehicle for your trip, South Carolina has a gem of a city to begin your arty journey. The city of Charleston beautifully combines the old-world charm of cobblestone roads and pastel-hued homes along with modern conveniences, like car services and five-star historical hotels. You can also explore all of the incredible southern art in the area. Charleston has over 55 art galleries, 17 museums, and many other art-centric offerings, according to Apartmentguide’s study. You can visit the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art to view the latest trends and works of modern-day artists in the city, which regularly holds exhibitions.

Philadelphia, PA
Another city you should add to your road trip map is the city of Philadelphia. It’s the home of the infamous Andy Warhol and The Philadelphia Museum of Art, where you can view Van Gogh’s "Sunflowers". It also houses a famous grand staircase that has a fantastic monument of Diana the Huntress. Are you a fan of Impressionistic art? If so, you’ll love The Barnes Foundation, which houses one of the largest collections of Impressionism in the region. If you have time to stay, you can catch live performances at Chapterhouse Cafe. You can also take part in a street tour to see the different murals around the city.

Chicago, IL
The windy city is practically synonymous with art. Hyde Park and Bridgeport have their fair share of art galleries, like Logan Center and Zhou B Art Center. Of course, you’ll need to visit The Art Institute of Chicago, which will allow you to experience art pieces from around the world as well as celebrated Midwestern artists. You can sign up for art classes or the activity center there, too, so you can take part in creative activities with your loved ones or friends. The Art Institute also has an award-winning gift shop, selling postcards of paintings, Frida Kahlo socks, Campbell soup can mugs, and many other quirky gifts.

No matter where you go in the U.S., there will be art that is waiting for you. It just so happens that there are certain cities that have a little more in terms of offerings for art lovers. So when you’re planning your road trip, don’t forget to note which cities you can add to your map so you can immerse yourself in the beauty and majesty of art.
