DETROIT, MICH.- The Detroit Institute of Arts has named Judith F. Dolkart as Deputy Director, overseeing the Curatorial and Learning and Audience Engagement divisions. She will join the DIA on January 6, 2020.

“As the director of an art museum located on an educational campus, Judith brings an ideal skillset to this new position,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA Director. “Being able to view and align our work through an art-based and education-focused lens will allow us to better serve our visitors with meaningful experiences that connect our collection, programs and learning experiences.”

Dolkart is the Mary Stripp & R. Crosby Kemper Director of the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. The Addison presents 9–12 exhibitions per year over three seasons, along with accompanying programming and publications.

Prior to her Addison appointment in spring 2014, she served as deputy director of art and archival collections and the Gund Family Chief Curator at the Barnes Foundation, where she helped plan the relocation of the collections from Merion to Philadelphia. Under her stewardship, the Barnes launched an exhibition program, which has presented artists as diverse as Ellsworth Kelly, Yinka Shonibare CBE, Paul Cézanne, and William Glackens.

Prior to 2010, Dolkart spent nine years at the Brooklyn Museum. Her exhibitions included two major reinstallations of the permanent collection in 2003 and 2008, as well as ‘Michelangelo of the Menagerie’: Bronzes by Antoine-Louis Barye (2005) and James Tissot: The Life of Christ (2009). She also coordinated the presentation of Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionism from Paris to the Sea (2009).

Dolkart received her B.A. from Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and her M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. She has served as a committee chair and trustee for the Association of Art Museum Curators. In 2013, Dolkart was a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. She is an active member of the Association of Art Museum Directors.
