LONDON.- Over 330 oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints from 17th – 20th century, with estimates from £100 - £7,000, are now on view online under British and Continental Pictures at www.olympiaauctions.com, as well as in a published catalogue.

Among the Modern European works in the sale, highlights include ‘Pommiers en fleurs à Saint Chéron’ a sketch by Hugues Claude Pissarro (born 1935), estimated at £2,0000-£3,000. A ‘sketch of a nude’ by Félix Vallotton (1865 – 1925), the French artist whose works, legacy and reputation is currently explored at the Royal Academy in London until 29th September, is estimated at £800-£1,200. ‘Nu et Nature Mort’ by Jean Jansem (1920-2013) one of the best-known Armenian artists of the 20th Century, whose early work is often characterized by his depictions of desolate women and children, garnering the name 'Le Miserablist' is estimated at £5,000-£7,000. ‘Der Traum der Aftermieterin (1922)’ by Otto Dix (1891-1969) is a study for a watercolour of one of a number of depictions of prostitutes that Dix completed around this time, including Ellis (1922), Hure (1922) and Elisa (1922). Estimate: £2000-£3000.

In the 19th century British pictures section, 'The Bridge on the mill pond, Upper Swell' by one of the foremost landscape painters of his day Sir Alfred East (1849-1913) is a view where from the artists' studio was situated near Stow on the Wold. It is estimated at £500-£700. ‘A portrait of a gentleman’ by Henri-Pierre Danloux (1753-1809), is estimated at £3000-£5000. Emigrating to England from France in 1792, his style of portraiture changed considerably as is evidenced in this painting of 1800. Danloux found it necessary to adapt himself to the less ornate, lighter tastes of the English demimonde and aristocracy who comprised his customers. Another highlight is a watercolour of 'A view of Windsor' by Alfred William Hunt (1830-1896), estimated at £2000-£3000. Hunt has been described as "fusing the sweep and atmosphere of Turner with Pre-Raphaelite finish and compositional originality.” (Scott-Wilcox).

There are a number of pictures in this section alluding to national or royal occasions, including the ‘Eglinton Tournament’ by the Hon. Roger Rollo, (1777-1847), who was present at this famous event, and his painting includes a depiction of Napoleon III and Lord Eglington himself. This is estimated at £3000-£4000. ‘The Investiture of the Star of India by George V at the Delhi Durbar of 1911’ by Lliam Barnes Wollen (1857 - 1936) depicts George V investing a number of Indian Royalty, officials and British figures of authority with the three classes of the Order of the Star of India. A larger depiction of this scene is in the Royal Collection, painted by George Jacomb-Hood. Estimate: £150-£250.

In a similar vein, a pair of oil paintings ‘Views of the Royal Barge at Virginia Water’ after JMW Turner, are derived from Turner’s etchings of 1830. The Royal Standard is flying on the Royal Barge, which indicates that George IV is on board. The buoy in the painting is decorated with the cross of St George, alluding to both the king’s birthday and St George’s Day, April 23rd. Estimate: £200-£300. A slightly later work by Feliks Topolski (1907-1989) 'The Procession of the Order of the Garter' is estimated at £250-£350.

A portrait of St George on a gilt background by Henry Le Jeune (1819-1904), a painter of Bible scenes and a teacher at Royal Academy will appeal to collectors of high church neo-medieval Victorian art; an ever-growing group after decades of disinterest. Estimate: £300-£500.

Among the 19th century Orientalist works ‘The Warrior’ by Mariano Fortuny y Carbo, (1838-1874), one of the most renowned Spanish painters of the 19th Century, can be compared to the ‘Arab Chief’ (1874, Philadelphia Museum of Art) and to ‘A Moroccan’ (1869, Prado Museum). It may date to the same period in Fortuny's oeuvre as the latter, as he produced a number of watercolours of Arab subjects in his studio in Rome at this time. He was particularly adept at capturing the effects of light while working in watercolour, as is demonstrated here in this highly atmospheric scene. Estimate: £3000-£5000.

In the Modern British section, two abstract works by Bryan Ingham are among the highlights. Also the intriguing 'Efficiency of Plough Designs in 1770' by Anna Zinkeisen (1901-1976) is estimated at £800-£1200.
