NEW YORK, NY.- Thierry Goldberg Gallery presents Grass Under The Wood, an online solo exhibition of paintings by Bony Ramirez.

Born in a small town in the Dominican Republic, before moving to the States as an early teen, Bony Ramirez retains a connection to his Dominican heritage through his art, incorporating elements of the Caribbean with his distinctive figures and details. It was during his early education in the Dominican Republic that the artist was first exposed to local iconography, with the easily identifiable symbols and motifs still making appearances in his current work, acting as a common visual language across cultures.

In addition to perspectives from his own immigrant experience, Ramirez pulls inspiration from a number of sources, including the Early Renaissance and Italian Mannerists—incorporating idealism into his depiction of the human form—as well elements of interior design, with paintings featuring highly ornate and extravagantly stylized settings. Resistant to dogmatic principles, especially in art making, Ramirez creates figures that, while elaborately rendered, dissolve into anatomical transformations: beginning with one idea before challenging its correctness and authority.

Ramirez creates via a variety of mediums, creating drawings and sculptures, in addition to his painting practice, with the latter often acting as a reference point for the two-dimensional works. Pieces evolve over the course of their creation; figures made on paper transform into complex compositions, whose construction can feature materials like wood, fabric, or marble.

Bony Ramirez (b. 1996, Tenares, Salcedo, Dominican Republic) lives and works in Perth Amboy, NJ. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art, Peekskill, NY; the Perth Amboy Center for the Arts, Perth Amboy, NJ; and the Shiman Art Gallery, Newark, NJ; including a solo exhibition at the Perth Amboy Center for the Arts.
