Sunset View by Albert Bierstadt highlights Doyle's American Paintings, Furniture & Decorative Arts Auction
Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), Sunset over the Trees. Est. $30,000-50,000.

NEW YORK, NY.- Doyle's online-only auction of American Paintings, Furniture & Decorative Arts closing on Tuesday, April 21 is the firm's premier venue for American paintings of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Showcased are numerous fine examples of Hudson River, Western and regional landscapes; portraiture; marine paintings and still lifes.

Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) introduced the grandeur of the American Rockies and Sierra Nevada to 19th century audiences. Oil sketches like Sunset Over the Trees, done in preparation for larger canvases, highlight the artist's attention to color and confident brushwork (est. $30,000-50,000).

William Trost Richards (1833-1905) painted views of the legendary King Arthur's Castle in almost every type of weather common in Cornwall. In a study offered in the sale, light breaking through the clouds illuminates the ruins of the Tintagel castle with a warm glow (est. $20,000-30,000).

Edward Moran (1829-1901), older brother to fellow artist Thomas, was widely considered one of the most significant 19th century maritime painters. A crisp scene on the New York Harbor displays the artist's masterful handling of the subject matter (est. $10,000-15,000).

Other prominent artists represented in the sale include Alfred Thompson Bricher, Thomas Hill, Hermann Ottomar Herzog, Eastman Johnson and Charles W. Knapp.

Furniture and decorative arts offerings in the sale span the Queen Anne and Chippendale through Federal and Classical styles, including silver, ceramics, mirrors, folk art, samplers, Chinese Export porcelain and rugs. Also featured are Audubon, Currier & Ives and topographical prints.

The sale boasts a broad selection of American silver, highlighted by an elaborately decorated circa 1900 Baltimore punch set by Hennegan Bates Co., from the Property of a Tudor City Lady (est. $7,000-10,000). Among the numerous flatware services are prime examples by Tiffany & Co., including Chrysanthemum and Japanese/Audubon patterns.

Bidding will end with a soft close on Tuesday, April 21 beginning at 10am EDT. View the catalogue and place bids online at Doyle.com
