SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Turner Auctions + Appraisals will present Maps, Books & Illustrations on Saturday, June 13, 2020, featuring over 210 printed works from the 16th-20th centuries. Sourced primarily from two California collectors, the auction offers maps from the 16th-19th centuries, mostly from Europe, plus one from Monterey, California. A wide range of individual books and multiple-volume sets on diverse subjects includes antique, vintage or first edition works in English, French and other languages. Among the sale's authors are Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Jack London, James Jones (signed), Raymond Chandler, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert Louis Stevenson, Victor Hugo, Pierre Corneille, Voltaire, William Shakespeare and many others. The illustrations feature 19th-century engravings of birds, landscapes, vedute and more from John Gould, John Webber, Antoine Ignace Melling, William Hogarth and other artists.

Turner Auctions + Appraisals begins its online auction on Saturday, June 13, 2020, at 10:30 am PDT; sale items are available for preview and bidding now. The auction will be featured live on multiple platforms: LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable, Bidsquare, iCollector, and Turner Auctions + Appraisals’ free mobile app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Apps ("Turner Auctions"). All are easily accessed through ‘Upcoming Auctions’ at the company’s website.

Lot 5: Title: Hand-colored Venetian map. Created: Late 17th/18th century. Size: 11 x 15 1/2 in. Frame: 17 x 21 in. Condition: Good, lite toning to paper. Medium: Hand colored engraving. Estimate $200 - $400.

Lot 154: Title: Mr. William Shakespeare, Comedies, Histories & Tragedies: Published According to the True Original Copies. The First Collected Edition of the Dramatic Works of William Shakespeare. A Reproduction in Exact Facsimile of The Famous First Folio, 1623, By the Newly Discovered Process of Photo-Lithography, Executed by Express Permission of Lord Ellesmere and the Trustees of the British Museum, from the Matchless Copies in Bridgewater House and in the National Library, at the Suggestion, and Under the Superintendence of H. Staunton. Author: William Shakespeare. Publisher: Day & Son, Limited, Lithographs and Publishers. Date: 1866. Description: Hardcover. Binding 19th-century ruby-red Morocco gilt-stamped panels. Condition: Good. Spine has separated from backing material. Estimate $1,000 - $1,500.

Lot 137: Title: For Whom the Bell Tolls. Author: Ernest Hemingway. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons. Date: 1940. Description: First Edition. First printing. Marked with an "A" on copyright page. First issue dust jacket. Price on inner flap, dust jacket. Hardcover. Bound in tan linen, with red title label on spine, lettered black. Condition: Very good edition. Dust jacket has some chips and tears. Estimate $700 - $900.

Lot 39: Artist: Antoine-Ignace MELLING (1763-1831). Medium: print multiple, engraving. Date: 1809 - 1819. Subject: The Maglova aqueduct at the Belgrad Forest, on the European shores of the Bosporus. Size: 20 3/4 x 28 1/4 in. (paper size). Condition: tear along the border and, some staining and toning to paper. Estimate $200 - $400.

Lot 17: Artist: François Nicolas Martinet (1725/31-1804). Title/Subject: "Perruche a front jaune, de Cayenne," "Martin-pêcheur a tête grise, du Senegal," Carouge, de Cayenne." Signature: two signed in plate. Medium: engraving, hand-colored. Size image: 9 1/2 x 7 in. Size frame: 14 1/2 x 11 in. Condition: toning to paper and foxing. Estimate $300 - $500.

Lot 53: Title: Le Opere di Guido Mazzoni e di Antonio Begarelli Celebri Plastici Modenesi. E Le Pitture Eseguite nelle Sale del Palazzo...Da Niccolo Abati, Bartolomeo Schedoni Ed Ercole Abati. Published: G. Vincenzi e Compagno, Modena, 1823. Description: Hardcover. Italian edition with illustrations. Condition: Good. Binding is in fair condition: leather is worn at edges and spine is missing pieces. Pages have slight browning to edges and some spotting, but pages and illustrations are clean overall. Estimate $500 - $1,500.

Lot 81: Title: A Complete History of Drugs Written in French by Monsieur Pomet Chief Druggist to the Prefent French King; to which is Added what is Further Observable on the Fame Subject. Author: Pomet, Lemery, and Tournefort. Published: London, 1712. Description: Hardcover. Leather spine. Illustrated. Condition: Fair condition. Cover board is unhinged. Leather on spine is chipped and missing pieces. Pages are spotted and browned. Estimate $500 - $1,000.

Lot 82: Title: The History of England from the Revolution to the Death of George the Second. Author: T. Smollett, M.D. Published: Printed for T. Cadell, Strand; and R. Baldwin, London, 1804. Description: Hardcover. Bound in leather. Gilt design and lettering on spine. 13 volumes. Condition: Good. Bumping, rubbing and chipping to spine. Estimate $500 - $1,000.

Lot 133: Title: Mapping the Transmississippi West 1540-1861. Author: Carl I. Wheat. Publisher: The Institute of Historical Cartography. Date: 1957-1960 Description: Volume 1, 2, 3 & 4. First edition. Limited to 1000 copies. Hardcover. Each volume bound linen cloth, with spine gilt lettering. Facsimile of hundreds of maps. v. 1. The Spanish entrada to the Louisiana Purchase, 1540-1804. v. 2. From Lewis and Clark to Fremont, 1804-1845. v. 3. From the Mexican War to the Boundary Surveys, 1846-1854. v. 4. From the Pacific Railroad Surveys to the onset of the Civil War, 1855-1860. Condition: Very good. Estimate $900 - $1,200.

Lot 55: Title: Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Author: Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. Published: Hodder and Stoughton, New York and London, 1909. Description: Hardcover. Illustrations by Edmund Dulac with 20 mounted colored plates. Limited edition, one of 750. Bound in gilt stamped vellum. Condition: Very good. Estimate $500 - $800.

Lot 138: Title: From Here to Eternity Author: James Jones. Signed by the author. Publisher: Charles Scribner's & Sons. Date: 1951. Description: First edition. First printing. Hardcover. Condition: Overall very good. Dust jacket is chipping and rubbed in areas. Foxing to endpapers. Top spine has a small tear. Used for both the cover illustration of Peyton Skipworth's book on Great Bird Illustrators and their art 1830-1930 and John Gould's final work, Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. Medium: lithograph. Size image: 21 x 14 in. Size frame: 31 x 25 in. Created: 1830-1888. Condition: toning to paper. Estimate $1,000 - $2,000.

Lot 189: Title: The Dispatches of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington, During his Various Campaigns in India, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, the Low Countries, and France, From 1799 to 1815. Author: Compiled by Lieut. Colonel Gurwood. Publisher: John Murray. Date: 1838 Description: Twelve volumes bound in brown leather with gilt design on the spine. Green leather title and volume blocks with gilt letters. Marbled endpapers and matching page edges. First editions throughout. Condition: Good-Very good. Leather rubbed off in some areas of spine. Slight foxing to endpapers. Estimate $1,500 - $1,900.
