FULLERTON, CA.- A new exhibit entitled “L@s Raramuris/Tarahumaras” invites viewers to take a glimpse at the culture of the Tarahumara long distance runners through the lens of famed photographer Oscar Castillo. This collection of photographs, taken in 1972, highlights the beauty of the runners’ traditional culture in the high Sierras of Chihuahua, Mexico, and their fight to uphold their traditions amidst modernization.

Castillo’s fascination with the cultural and political fabric of various societies started when he was stationed in Japan as a Marine. He was drawn to the vibrant scenes of anti-nuclear weapons protests as well as the kaleidoscope of traditional Japanese clothing the protestors wore. From then on, he began exploring the notion of community, family, and a sense of belonging.

The artist is best known for his photographic documentation of the Chicano Moratorium in L.A., of which he has composed some of the world’s most renowned photos of the movement. His photographs of the movement have since been showcased at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Avenue 50 Studio in Los Angeles.

Throughout all of his photography, Castillo has aimed to emulate the same quality of familial storytelling that was layered in his mother’s family photo album. “L@s Raramuris/Tarahumaras” will allow people to connect with this sentiment in a way that encourages them to think about the ties that exist between cultures.

In the words of Jimmy Centeno, guest curator of the exhibit, “Oscar Castillo’s exhibition embraces a world that reigns with wisdom and endurance.” We are truly honored to have his meaningful work in our gallery.

“L@s Raramuris/Tarahumaras” will be on view from June 8th to August 2nd. For the health and safety of our visitors, the exhibit will only be available for private 15-minute viewings for groups of no more than four people. All visitors will be required to wear a mask and make a reservation online.

There is a $5 entry fee for each group. Fees can be paid in cash on arrival or online.

A virtual exhibition will also be made available to share this work with those unable to attend in person.
