19th & 20th century art to be offered at Swann March 4

NEW YORK, NY.- 19th & 20th Century Art is at auction on Thursday, March 4 at Swann Galleries. The sale will feature exceptional prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture from Modernists, New York artists, and Latin American stalwarts.

Standout original works by European Modernist masters are on offer, including Pablo Picasso who leads the sale with an original double-sided pencil drawing Nu debout’ Nature morte et Étude d’Homme, 1914, at $60,000 to $90,000. Also available by Picasso is a 1905 black crayon drawing Arlequin de profil à la collarette, at $20,000 to $30,000. Maurice de Vlaminck’s 1945 oil-on-canvas Rue de Village is expected at $20,000 to $30,000; and, watercolors by Francis Picabia, Fernand Léger and Jean Arp include Picabia’s San titre (Le Rêve), 1930–32, Léger’s Portrait de Rimbaud, 1949, both offered at $20,000 to $30,000; and Arp’s 1964 abstract image, at $8,000 to $12,000. Additional unique works include pencil drawings by Barbara Hepworth and Edvard Munch. Hepworth is present with Clinic #3, 1947 ($40,000-60,000); and Munch with Portrait of a Young Woman, circa 1882 ($25,000-35,000).

From the nineteenth-century portion of the sale are etchings The Little Lagoon, 1880, and The Fish Shop, Venice, 1879–80, by James A. M. Whistler, expected to cross the block at $15,000 to $20,000, and $12,000 to $18,000, respectively. Barbizon school artists feature Charles-François Daubigny with an 1855 red chalk drawing Paysage au bord de l’étang ($2,000-3,000), and Jean-François Millet with a conté crayon drawing Étude de Figure ($5,000-8,000). Impressionism and Post-Impressionism include Berthe Morisot’s 1884 watercolor Autruches et Paons au Jardin d’Acclimatation ($7,000-10,000); Paul Signac’s Antibes, a 1919 watercolor and pencil boat scene ($20,000-30,000); as well as color lithographs by Claude Monet and George W. Thornley with Blanche Hoschedé, poignant, 1894 ($10,000-15,000), and Femme à l’ombrelle (Suzanne Horschedé), 1908 ($12,000-18,000).

Following Swann’s record-setting sale of Louis Lozowick’s New York, 1925, in November 2020, the house is set to offer Lozowick’s 1929 lithograph 57th Street, which is expected to bring $10,000 to $15,000. Further New York artists featured in the sale include Martin Lewis with Which Way, an extremely scare 1932 aquatint estimated at $30,000 to $50,000; Bay Windows, drypoint, 1929 ($20,000-30,000); and Little Penthouse, drypoint, 1931 ($15,000-20,000). Reginald Marsh is available with a 1969 portfolio with complete text and 30 etchings and engravings ($10,000-15,000); and Childe Hassam is on offer with The Broad Curtain, lithotint, 1918 ($8,000-12,000); and Thomas Hart Benton with The Race, lithograph, 1942 ($10,000-15,000).

A run of works by Diego Rivera stands out among the selection of works by Latin American artists in the sale. Of the highlights by Rivera, most notable are Mujeres dando limosna fuera de una Iglesia, a 1934 watercolor, ink and pencil work, estimated at $25,000 to $35,000; Estudio para Mercado, a 1934 pencil drawing, at $15,000 to $20,000; and Desnudo sentado con brazos levantados (Frida Kahlo), a 1930 lithograph, at $10,000 to $15,000. Two bronze sculptures by Francisco Zúñiga, and original drawings by Wifredo Lam, Rufino Tamayo, José Clemente Orozco round out the offering.
