Roy Lichtenstein, Yellow Vase (detail), 1990. painted and printed paper collage on board. 33 1/4 x 54 7/8 inches 84.5 x 139.4 cm. signed and dated 'rf Lichtenstein' on verso.

NEW YORK.- Modern to Pop: Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, a changing exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculpture by such artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fernando Botero, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Willem de Kooning, Jim Dine, Jean Dubuffet, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Henry Moore, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Joel Shapiro, Wayne Thiebaud, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and others.

This exhibition will emphasize the evolving relationship between artist and perception, medium and representation. Highlights of this show include two Wesselmann liquitex on boards “Nude with Seascape” and “Study for Seascape I.” These simplified forms demonstrate Wesselmann’s reduced fields of color and bold sexuality. Close up views of the profile of the mouth and nose or a silhouetted foot against the blue of the beach become intimate images of an unknown body. Another highlight is a classic Miró mural study from the 1940s. The delicate brushwork and simple images exemplify Miró’s understated style.

Also featured, is a Lichtenstein collage “Yellow Vase.” An image of the Warhol “Flowers” hangs on the wall of Lichtenstein’s sterile modern interior. The composition is filled with his signature Benday dots and patches of swirling color.

The James Goodman Gallery is located at 41 E. 57th Street, 8th Floor between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
