Exquisite Collection of Fans on View at the Brooks |

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.- Did you know that fanning quickly could mean one is engaged and that fanning slowly could mean one is married? Discover the fascinating language of fans through a new exhibition at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. "Fanfare" consists of 19 beautifully handcrafted fans from the mid- to late- nineteenth century. The exhibition will be on display in a third floor gallery of the Brooks until August 21, 2005.
Fans were practical objects before the advent of electricity. Yet, they were often superbly crafted, reflecting the wealth and taste of their owners. Made of silk, paper, tortoise shell, and mother-of-pearl, these fans are embellished with gilding, lace, feathers, sequins, and mirrors. Their beauty inspired associate curator Stanton Thomas to display and interpret them.
"One of the great things about working at the Brooks is the diversity of the collection. It ranges from Old Master paintings to African art to contemporary works to, of course, fans. I had no idea that we possessed so many fans, especially ones of such quality and beauty. It was also fascinating to look at them from a cultural standpoint -- both as art works representing bygone eras as well as very personal, even intimate, objects, " states Thomas.
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has over 8,000 works in its permanent collection. Changing temporary exhibitions such as "Fanfare" allow the museum to display its vast collection to the public.
