ROCKLAND, ME.- The Farnsworth Art Museum presents
Artists and Architecture–Portraits of the 1980s: Photographs by Bob Brooks, on view through July 24, 2005. An instructor of photography at the School of the Visual Arts in New York City and a longtime summer resident of Montville, Maine, Bob Brooks has photographed many noted art colleagues including Alex Katz, Lois Dodd, Yvonne Jacquette, Rudy Burkhardt, Anne Arnold and others. He says, “In 1981, I began a series of photographs of artist friends. ... What I was looking for in these photographs was a moment that most described a universal concept, that transcended just being a good photograph of the person who was my subject.” Throughout the 1980s, Brooks also produced a series of architectural photographs of buildings in NYC. His approach and goal “was to make portraits of buildings by selecting a detail that described the building as a whole and to make a photographic statement about light, texture and time.” In this exhibition, images from Brooks’parallel series of 1980s portraits are presented together.
