LONDON.- Cromwell Place, the international arts destination and Membership organisation, has announced its autumn programming focusing on three key themes of Design, Asian Art, and International Contemporary Art.

Since opening its doors last October, Cromwell Place has fast become one of London's most exciting arts destinations. Providing its members flexible, pay-as-you-need services, it is the home to a local and international community of arts professionals. Art dealers, advisors, curators, collectors and institutions have year-round access to exhibition space, viewing rooms, offices, art storage and logistical support, bringing to London a programme of art and antiquities, all accessible to the public.

Cromwell Place offers a place for Members and collectors to meet, collaborate and conduct business. The exhibitions for September to November 2021 reflect the global and multidisciplinary nature of the art market and our Membership, including:

Design at Cromwell Place - September

Cromwell Place will be partnering with Brompton Design District to bring a two week programme (15-26 September) curated by Jane Withers which offers a platform to prescient and emerging voices in design. At Cromwell Place, Dzek presents a collection of new furniture modules by Formafantasma clad in their non-extractive volcanically glazed ExCinere tiles, while SEEDS Gallery showcases a positive response to the theme with an installation entitled More Joy.

The works will also be shown alongside presentations by:

Gray M.C.A (15-26 September): ‘Drawing on Style’ is an exhibition celebrating rare and unseen fashion illustrations from post-war 1940s to the present day. Presented by Gray M.C.A, the international leaders in the field of original Fashion illustration, the exhibition will showcase an assemblage of rare original works that adorned the pages of influential magazines and newspapers throughout the 20th century, capturing the iconic designs of the world’s fashion powerhouses. Exquisite illustrations by the likes of David Downton, Ali Mahdavi, Gladys Perint Palmer, Antonio Lopez, René Bouché, René Gruau and more will be on display.

Lehmann Maupin (16 September-6 November): ‘Desire Lines’, an exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based artist Liza Lou, and her fifth exhibition with Lehmann Maupin. The exhibition will feature 10 works that poetically illustrate Lou’s engagement with the natural environment, abstraction, and her own oeuvre spanning 30 years.

Cromwell Place During London Fairs - October

A must-see destination to coincide with Frieze week and additional London fairs, exhibitions will feature international modern and contemporary art from Members including: European ArtEast Foundation (6-17 October): An exhibition of 12 works by Franciszka Themerson created during the 1960s when the colours of her work were drifting between black and grey. The exhibition differs from all her other shows in that it deals with very particular works that demonstrate the artist’s exceptional techniques with the use of materials. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the publication of a monograph about her life, thought and work by Nick Wadley.

Circle Gallery (6-17 October): Circle Art Gallery is the foremost gallery space in Kenya, it was established in 2012 in Nairobi to build local and international audiences for the very best East African artists. The gallery’s first UK exhibition is a group show offering an overview of the very best artists working in the East African region, from emerging to established artists; including painters, sculptors, video artists, works on paper and installation works.

Black Box Projects (6-17 October): Black Box Projects will present ‘Evidence of Absence’, artist Adam Jeppesen’s first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom.

Galeria MPA (13-17 October): Based in Madrid, Galeria MPA has been offering a diverse programme in contemporary art, featuring established artists in the Spanish national and international scene and supporting emerging artists with innovative artistic visions. Galeria MPA will exhibit their Spanish-oriented programme at Cromwell Place with the aim to expand the gallery’s presence to an international audience.
Ingleby Gallery (13-17 October): Ingleby Gallery will host ‘New Paintings’ by Andrew Cranston and Lorna Robertson.

Lawrie Shabibi (13-17 October): This exhibition will showcase works by Peruvian artist Ishmael Randall Weeks.

Tabari Artspace (13-17 October): Showing works by Alfred Basbous, whose artistic philosophy is grounded in simplicity, prioritised aesthetic principles of shape, movement, line and material. A central figure in the development and advancement of Modernism in the Middle East during the latter part of the twentieth century, Alfred Basbous’s sculptural works - predominantly in bronze, wood, metal, and stone - express a lifelong appreciation of the purity of the human form, in particular the female body, and its abstract properties.

Asian Art in London at Cromwell Place - October

Cromwell Place will be a venue partner for this year’s edition of Asian Art in London, with a focus on Indian/Islamic art from 21-30 October and East Asian art from 28 October-6 November. Asian Art in London is an annual programme and ground-breaking celebration, open to all primary dealers and auction houses with a specific focus on Asian Art - based in London and internationally.

Exhibitors include Runjeet Singh, a specialist in Antique Eastern Arms and Armour, the antique Asian jewellery dealer Sue Ollemans, and Aktis Gallery, which is based between London and Paris. (20 October-7 November)

In tandem with this, Cromwell Place will also be celebrating their Asian art and antiquities focused members during October including exhibitions from: Anastasia von Seibold Japanese Art (27 October-7 November): ‘Edo to Now: 400 Years of Japanese Art’ brings together a selection of fine Japanese art from the 17th century to the present day. Including woodblock prints by artists Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada and Totoya Hokkei, as well as beautiful folding screens, fine lacquer from a private collection, and contemporary paintings. A highlight of the exhibition is a masterpiece by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) – ‘Rainstorm beneath the Summit’, a woodblock print from the iconic series ‘Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’.

Further exhibitions will be announced in the coming weeks via Cromwell Place’s website and social media platforms.

Additional Highlights

A3 - Arndt Art Agency (8-19 September): 'Freefall' is a solo presentation, by one of Australia's most visible contemporary painters, Ben Quilty. Widely known for his thick, gestural oil paintings he has explored a range of themes throughout his career. Apart from his role as an artist, he is also known as an Australian social commentator. From the dangerous coming of age rituals of young Australian men, to the complex social history of Australia as a nation, he is constantly critiquing notions of identity, patriotism and belonging.

(15-19 September): ‘Kindred’ is the monumental work by leading Australian artist Patricia Piccinini, best known for her transgenic menagerie of disturbing, hyper realistic creatures. Constructed from silicone and fiberglass, these hybrid sculptures investigate the potential rise of new and troubling developments through the advance of biotechnology and genetic manipulation. One of Australia’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, Patricia Piccinini's startling sculptures examine the connections between science and nature, art and the environment.

Oliver Hoare Ltd. (22 September-24 October): ‘The Natural World’, is a public exhibition dedicated to approximately 40 rare and fascinating objects paying tribute to wonders of the natural world – from Chinese root sculptures and scholar’s rocks to ancient stone carvings, meteorites, and imperial relics, including Ranjit Singh’s gilded bezoar stones and a sapphire inscribed as belonging to King Seleucus (3rd century BC).

Art UK (29 September): Cromwell Place is partnering with Art UK - the cultural education charity that is bringing together the nation’s art on one platform - on a fundraising auction that will feature works by some of the UK’s leading contemporary artists. Selected works by artists including Rana Begum, Veronica Ryan and Rose Wylie will be exhibited ahead of a live auction on 29 September.

Selma Feriani Gallery (6-10 October): ‘Archaic Contingency’ is an exhibition by Chilean artist Catalina Swinburn, and marks the artist's third solo exhibition with Selma Feriani. The exhibition will include installations and sculptures, and is a result of an investigation into literature’s depiction of weaving as a dynamic activity, and how it subsequently served as a platform for gender ideology.

Augusta Edwards Fine Art (20-31 October): “Transmigrations” will focus on two series of works, 'India Song' and 'Metamorphoses' by American photographer Karen Knorr.
The National Portrait Gallery is to stage the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2021 exhibition at Cromwell Place (10 November 2021-2 January 2022), while the Gallery’s building in St Martin’s Place is closed until 2023 for major redevelopment works. The exhibition will be the first new major exhibition staged exclusively by the National Portrait Gallery since works began on the Gallery’s transformational Inspiring People project in summer 2020. The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize celebrates and promotes the very best in contemporary portrait photography.

Cromwell Place also announced its newest members: DADA Gallery: DADA Gallery represents exciting emerging artists from Africa and its diaspora, exploring wide ranging themes such as youth, identity, sexuality and socio-economic issues.
