Hindman Auctions to present Native American Art Auction this month
Polychrome Pottery Olla by Martina Vigil and Florentino Montoya, ca 1910. Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000.

CHICAGO, IL.- On September 17, Hindman Auctions will present its Native American Art auction, which will feature one-of-a-kind items from tribes across North America in a wide range of collecting categories including basketry, pottery, textiles, beadwork, jewelry and more. Previously under the Cowan’s brand, the auction marks the first live auction for Danica Farnand, Director and Senior Specialist of Native American, Prehistoric & Tribal Art, and her Cincinnati-based team under the Hindman brand.

“We may have a new logo at the top of the catalogue, but the sale is still going to have the same great material we have always had,” said Farnand. “I am proud of the department we have built at Cowan’s and am excited for the new opportunities ahead under the Hindman name.”

Highlights include an early Algonquin effigy pipe (lot 5; estimate: $30,000-40,000) that is carved of fine grain limestone and appears to be without precedent in the early protohistoric period. The human effigy sculpted in realistic portrait-like detail is among the most refined of human depictions from the Northeastern Woodlands. The figure, wearing silver ball and drop earrings, suggests a mid-17th century dating. The human effigy and animated otter Manitou both face the smoker. Another exquisite lot is a polychrome pottery olla by Martina Vigil and Florentino Montoya (lot 210; estimate: $25,000-35,000).

Standout beadwork lots include an Ute beaded mountain lion hide bowcase and quiver (lot 66; estimate: $20,000 - $25,000) and a Metis Cree shot pouch, with powder horns (lot 6; estimate: $10,000-15,000). A matched pair of late 19th century Cheyenne beaded hide possible bags that are sinew sewn and beaded using colors of red white-heart, medium blue, greasy yellow, dark blue, and white make up a remarkable item (lot 50; estimate: $10,000-15,000).

Exceptional textiles include a Navajo late classic moki pattern serape (lot 179; estimate: $14,000 - $18,000) and a Navajo Germantown Moki-Style weaving (lot 243; estimate: $10,000-15,000).

Other exceptional lots are an Arapaho drawing, from the Vincent Price Ledger Book (lot 81; estimate: $10,000-15,000) and a Sioux child's pictorial beaded hide leggings, with American flags, deer, rooster, and flowers (lot 84; estimate: $8,000-12,000).

Bidding for the September 17 auction will begin at 10am ET. Bidders will be able to participate via absentee bid, by phone, or live online through the Digital Bid Room, Hindman’s recently launched online and mobile bidding platform. Private preview of the auction will be available at Hindman’s Cincinnati office by appointment only.
