COLLEGEVILLE, PA.-The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College will host "Norman Rubington (1921-1991)Full Circle: New York, Paris, Rome, London, New York, a retrospective of the works of Norman Rubington, brought together here for the first time through the Norman Rubington Gallery. The exhibit, which includes sketchbooks, original works and illustrated publications from throughout the artist’s prolific career, runs until Oct. 9.
An accomplished painter, poet, filmmaker and novelist, winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome and Guggenheim Fellowship, Rubington is a respected figure in the international art scene of the 1950s and 1960s. He was originally a member of the New York School of painters.
He studied at the Yale University School of Art and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during the 1940s. His work was highly acclaimed in France; in 1948, he had his first one-man show in Paris at the Salon d'Automne. He was the only American artist invited to join a group of French painters who subsequently produced the limited-edition book illustrated by Rubington titled Douze Peintres, Douze Poetes (Twelve Painters, Twelve Poets).
After winning the Prix de Rome in 1951, he spent much of the remainder of his career in Europe, though he periodically returned to live and work in New York, and moved back permanently in 1970. Working predominantly in the medium of painting until the 1960s, Rubington subsequently experimented extensively with literary media, book illustration, and film animation that has been described as a precursor to the sort of animation identified with Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
