Denver Art Museum Adds News Administrative Position

DENVER, CO.-The Denver Art Museum (DAM) has added a new management position, deputy director of collections and programs, to focus on exhibitions and other programming for the new Museum complex. As construction of the Frederic C. Hamilton Building expansion progresses, the Museum is beginning to look beyond the opening of the new complex next year to the collections and related programs it would like to bring to the region. Dr. Timothy Standring, the Museum’s current chief curator, has been appointed to fill this position.

As the Museum heads into the final year prior to the opening of the Hamilton Building, the Museum’s director, Lewis Sharp, created this position to ensure that ample time and personnel resources are allocated to focus on the Museum’s collections and programs, while allowing Sharp to focus his own energy on fundraising and completing the expansion project. Sharp will pull back from the daily administrative aspects of the Museum and look to deputy director Cindy Abramson to take the lead. Abramson’s title is changing to deputy director of administration; she will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Museum and its management committee.

“This is one of the most important periods in the museum’s history and it is time to focus on the future beyond the opening of the new complex,” said Sharp. “Timothy Standring’s outstanding relationships in the art world will undoubtedly result in landmark exhibitions and exciting opportunities for this community. His vision for the future of the Denver Art Museum will help define the Museum in the next decade.”

Dr. Standring joined the DAM in 1989 and has since held the positions of curator of European and American painting and sculpture and chief curator. Previous to joining the DAM, he was an associate professor of art and director of the School of Art and Art History at the University of Denver.
