LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.-The Sheldom Memorial Art Gallery presents April Gornik: Paintings and Drawings, on view through October 23, 2005. April Gornik’s paintings and drawings are powerful contemporary landscapes, which evoke a sense of place while presenting artificial worlds. Her compositions, which are suffused with light, have been described as “a meditation on light,” and respond to Romantic landscape traditions. Inspired by scenery the artist has encountered in dreams and travels, her motifs are devoid of any human (or even animal) presence, conveying a sense of mystery. This mid-career survey features 36 paintings and large-scale drawings by Gornik, dating from 1980 to the present. These document the artist’s career and offer insight to her approach of themes and media in her work.

April Gornik: Paintings and Drawings was organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York. It was funded, in part, by the New York State Council for the Arts, a state agency; the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art; the Westchester Arts Council with funds from the Westchester County Government; and the April Gornik Patrons Circle. April Gornik: Paintings and Drawings is made possible through the generous support of Pinnacle Bank, Rembolt Ludtke LLP, the Nebraska Arts Council, and the Nebraska Art Association.
