NEW YORK, NY.- Adelson Galleries New York presents Patrick Hughes: A New Perspective. This exhibition — Hughes' first solo show in New York since 2017 — exemplifies the artist’s array of subject matter, from Venetian scenes to complex interiors and still lives. The exhibition is primarily composed of new Reverspective paintings exhibited for the first time, as well as several of Hughes’ collaged paintings and multiples.

(British, b. 1939) Patrick Hughes’ first solo show was in 1961 in Mayfair, London. The catalogue introduction was by the critic David Sylvester. He has since held one person exhibitions in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and New York, and in France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Switzerland, one hundred and fifty-four so far. Patrick made his first reverspective relief painting in 1964 and has refined his technique hugely over the last fifty years. It is widely imitated. These works are constructed of wooden pyramids in perspective but the wrong way round, with the furthest point of the space represented being closest to the viewer. The resulting illusion is extraordinary. As the viewer relates to the painting it seems to change seamlessly, giving a deep impression of moving in the room or around the architecture depicted.

The University of London granted Patrick Hughes the degree of Doctor of Science in 2014 for his contribution to the study of the psychology of perception. Hughes has throughout his career studied and written about visual and verbal logic: his book Paradoxymoron, Foolish Wisdom in Words and Pictures offers a magisterial insight into his original way of thinking. The Tate Gallery, the British Library, the British Academy, The Wurth Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Detroit Institute of Art and many other institutions hold Hughes’ art. His resourceful and imaginative work, reflecting on the whole history of art and architecture, is inspiring and revealing about our world and how we relate to it.

For over 50 years, Adelson Galleries has handled some of the finest American paintings to come to market, placing works in major private and public collections. Founded in 1965 by Warren Adelson, the gallery is distinguished for its expertise in the fields of American Impressionism, Realism, and Modernism. Today, the entire family works together between New York and Palm Beach. Our program of exhibitions and stable of artists feature some of the finest examples of recent art history. We believe our international selection of

living artists will fill in the blanks in our next generation’s art history textbooks. Our family believes in pursuing artists with aesthetic, technical, and academic merit. If art is a reflection of culture, we hope to provide a significant and poignant view.
