Painter of Horses Richard Stone Reeves Dies |

GREENPORT, NY.-The premier equestrian artist Richard Stone Reeves, 85, died. Richard Stone Reeves was born in Manhattan on November 6, 1919. He was a descendant of the American portraitist Thomas Sully. He earned a bachelor's degree in art from Syracuse University in 1941. He met Bob Johnson, president of Roosevelt Raceway while he has a naval intelligence officer in China during World War II. Johnson offered to help him after the war was over when he learned he had a passion for horses.
Leading breeders and owners around the world commissioned him. Among his subjects were: Spectacular Bid, Affirmed, Genuine Risk, Kelso, Northern Dancer, Buckpasser, Cigar, Dark Star, Forego, John Henry, Nijinsky II, Ruffian, Seattle Slew, and Secretariat. Among his patrons were W. Averell Harriman, Paul Mellon, Allaire duPont, Harry Guggenheim and the Aga Khan.
