Woven Rainbows: American Indian Trade Blankets
American Indian Trade Blanket, c. 1911. American, Oregon, Oregon City. Manufacturer: Oregon City Woolen Mills. Gift of Dena S. Katzenberg, Baltimore, BMA 1991.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.-The Baltimore Museum of Art presents Woven Rainbows: American Indian Trade Blankets, on view through May 14, 2006. Designed to appeal to Native Americans, these blankets adorned with brilliant colors, stylized arrowheads, and geometric patterns became objects of prestige for tribal members, preferred over their native weavings. They also became items for dramatic and exotic decoration in Anglo-American homes, as will be illustrated by the decoration of one of the Museum's period rooms in a circa 1910 style. The blankets and their use in both Native American and white households provide insight into the value held by both cultures. This is the first time that these blankets from the BMA's collection will be on display. The exhibition is generously supported by Morton C. Katzenberg in memory of Dena S. Katzenberg, Consultant Curator of Textiles at the BMA from 1969 to 2000.
