NEW YORK, NY.- After 17 years in New York Citys West Chelsea Arts Building,
Alexander Gray Associates announces its move to Tribeca in early 2024. The Gallery will occupy the 7,500 square foot ground floor of 384 Broadway, between Walker and White Streets. Gallery neighbors on the block include Andrew Kreps, PPOW, 125 Newbury/Arnie Glimcher, and JTT Gallery.
384 Broadway was built in 1859, as the northern half of 380 Broadway, a marble-clad, cast-iron Italianate style store and loft building. Art production and eduction have been a presence at the address for generations. The building was home to the Whitney Museums storied Independent Study Program from 1981 through 2000. In the 2000s, it was home to the Florentine Music School, which provided piano lessons to neighborhood youth in Chinatown and Tribeca.
The Gallery will be designed by Markus Dochantschis architecture firm Studio MDA, who have worked on many of the neighborhoods galleries, including Bortolami, PPOW, Andrew Kreps and Luhring Augustine. Their design will preserve and spotlight the architectural details of the space: marble clad walls, ornate cast iron columns, tin ceilings, and wrought iron balustrades. These historical elements will be in contrast with poured concrete floors and floating walls, as well as state-of-the-art lighting systems. The program includes multiple exhibition spaces, including an 1100 square foot column-free gallery space; private viewing rooms; offices; a research library; and storage for art and artist archives.
Co-Founder and Owner Alexander Gray comments, Since 2006, the Gallery has prioritized the exhibition of artworks in clean, defined galleries. This sensitivity to our public will continue in Tribeca, amidst a historic neighborhood of ground-breaking artistic practice and community. The Gallery, and our remarkable team, are invigorated as we enter this critical new chapter in the Gallerys development, serving artists whose practices expand conversations about form, art history, and cultural contexts. Our new facility will provide memorable exhibitions, research resources, and programmatic experiences to our community of artists, academics, and audiences.
