AMSTERDAM.- Laurence des Cars (1966), President-Director of the Mus閑 du Louvre, has been appointed to the
Van Gogh Museum Supervisory Board as of 1 February 2023. Des Cars: It is an honour to join the Van Gogh Museum Supervisory Board, whose members I would like to thank for their trust. I look forward to fostering dialogue between European museums and sharing our experience, expertise and ideas.
The Van Gogh Museum Supervisory Board has appointed Des Cars as a member for a period of four years. It is an honour to welcome the Director of the world-famous Mus閑 du Louvre to the Board.
The first female President-Director of the Louvre in its 230-year history, Laurence des Cars was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron in 2021. After graduating from Sorbonne University, the 蒫ole du Louvre and the Institut National du Patrimoine, Des Cars was appointed as Curator of Paintings at the Mus閑 dOrsay in 1994, where she curated a number of successful exhibitions, including on Gustave Courbet and 蒬ouard Vuillard.
She became Scientific Director of France-Mus閡ms from 2007 to 2014, overseeing the creation of Louvre Abu Dhabi. From 2017 to 2021, Des Cars was Director of the Mus閑 dOrsay and the Mus閑 de lOrangerie. The Black Models. From G閞icault to Matisse show she programmed in 2019 won global acclaim.
Des Cars is a Knight of the French Legion of Honour, a Knight of the National Order of Merit and a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.
